Coles River Crochet Along – FAQ’s

Coles River Kerchief Crochet Along

I’m so overwhelmed and grateful for all of the Coles River Crochet Along excitement! Yesterday’s announcement was a big one, and I’m glad you’re all feeling it with me. As with any big announcement, there are bound to be questions. This post covers all the questions I’ve received about the Coles River CAL so far.

Questions about the Pattern

Is this pattern suitable for beginners?

I’d say this pattern is perfect for confident beginners. You’ll have the most success if you know how to read a pattern, know basic crochet abbreviations, and have done crochet increasing before. Tension will be crucial for keeping your project uniform. If you’re comfortable with your crochet skills or even looking for a bit of a challenge, the Coles River CAL is a perfect fit for you.

Will the pattern be available for individual purchase?

The Coles River Kerchief won’t be available for individual purchase until after the CAL is complete. The scheduled release date is October 3rd.

Will the pattern be released all at once, or piece by piece?

The CAL starts with a week long Pre-Game, where participants are encouraged to get oriented in the CAL Facebook group, purchase their yarn, and create (and share!) a swatch. Week 1 of crocheting begins September 4th. All participants will receive a link to the FULL pattern in their inbox on the morning of September 4th. The CAL does include weekly milestones, but makers are encouraged to work at their own pace.

Questions about the Yarn

What type of yarn will I need and how much?

The original Coles River Kerchief used single ply fingering weight yarn supplied by indie dyer Jake of Kenyarn. In total, I used just over 720 yards. The pattern is written recipe style with plenty of room for adjustments, so 2 skeins of any fingering weight yarn should do. But if you want my advice, wait for Jake’s CAL exclusive kits to go on sale Friday 😉

Is a kit from Kenyarn required for the CAL?

Purchasing a kit from Kenyarn isn’t required for the CAL, but that’s what I’ll be using for my CAL sample. Jake is really meticulous in his dye process and has been a gracious partner in planning this project. I wish we could all support him, but Jake let me know that he only has 16 ready-to-ship kits that he specially dyed for the CAL. Want a peek?

Aren’t they gorgeous?! My original vision for the skeins I received was a modern ice blue on the very cool side. Jake matched it perfectly and expanded the color range for the CAL. He has several kits of the original ice blue (third from the right, now called Toni Blue!), and a limited number of the other kits. He named them after regional treasures near his hometown. Some of my favorite names are Hot Club Pink and Providence Peach!

General CAL Questions

When does registration open?

Friday, August 24th.

When does the CAL start?

Friday, August 24th.

Are there a limited number of registrations?

No, ma’am! This CAL welcomes every crocheter of every level from anywhere. Whether this is your first CAL or your 99th, we’d love to have you.

How much is registration?

Registration for the CAL is $15 and opens on Friday, August 24th. Registration will take place on via a product listing. After purchase, participants will receive a PDF with info just for CAL participants, including the full list of sponsors, prizes, and a detailed, weekly CAL calendar.

I’ve never had to pay for a CAL. What gives?

If you know me at all, you know that I firmly believe everyone’s time is valuable. Unlike some CALs that are sponsored by yarn or craft companies that pay designers, I am running the Coles River CAL without monetary sponsorship. I needed to take that into account, especially considering how AMAZING I wanted this CAL to be. Between planning, multiple blog posts, promotional and educational videos, sponsor recruitment, graphic design, and all the other elements I’ve been so intentional about when it comes to this CAL, please know that the registration fee was intentionally calculated. Investment in this CAL gives me the chance to host free CALs in the future and to continue producing content for my platforms.

Will there be a registration discount for Cozy Club members?

You’ll have to sign up and see 😉

I hope I covered all of your questions! You can also check out my original blog post. If you still have questions, drop them in the comments below or join me for a special Ask Me Anything Instagram Live stream! I’m going live at 7pm ET on my Instagram profile.

    Hey Toni!!
I know I’m literally the only one on the entire earth, but I don’t have Facebook anymore, for the last few years. Is participation in the Facebook CAL group required/necessary to join?
    Thanks so much!

Hi Rachel! You’re not alone 🙂 Facebook is in no way required for the CAL. There are several giveaways, one of which is chosen from participants in the Facebook group, but there are plenty others chosen from other platforms. The only thing I’d suggest you absolutely do to get the most out of the CAL is to join the associated email list. Hope that helps! And I can’t wait to see you in the CAL!

Do you have to be on FB? Or are the weekly instructions emailed out?

Hi Kathleen! Nope, you don’t have to be on Facebook to participate. There is a weekly email that I’ll send out to participants. If you register for the CAL, just make sure you join that email list.

Hi! Thanks so much for your interest. I’m sorry to say that the CAL is now closed, but I hope you’ll try the Coles River Kerchief when the pattern comes out next month! I’m hoping to do more CALs in the future, though. The best way to know about them would be to sign up for my email list here:
