Coles River Crochet Along!

Coles River Crochet Along

It’s finally time, friends! I’m ready to spill the beans about the big project I’ve had under wraps for months now. Along with my new friend Jake from Kenyarn, I’m excited to announce the Coles River Crochet Along (CAL), a 6-week event to coincide with the release of my new pattern, the Coles River Kerchief!

I’ve never hosted a crochet along before, but I figured there’s no time like the present. I’m so excited, and I hope you’ll join me on this adventure!

What’s a Crochet Along?

Essentially, a crochet along is an online party for crocheters around the world!

We’ll all start and finish the Coles River Kerchief together, beginning with sourcing our yarn and ending with blocking and styling. The 6-week agenda looks something like this:

  • Pre-Game, August 24th – September 3rd: Choosing yarn and making a swatch.
  • Week 1, September 4th – 10th: Full pattern arrives in your inbox! Complete Part 1.
  • Week 2, September 11th – 17th: Complete Part 2.
  • Week 3, September 18th – 24th: Complete Part 3.
  • Block Party, September 25th – October 1st: Blocking and styling.

Through our private CAL email list and Facebook group, we’ll share progress, make friends, win prizes, and even use exclusive discounts from our crochet along sponsors.

About the Coles River Kerchief

If you’ve been around TL Yarn Crafts for a while, you know that I released my Flatiron Shawl pattern earlier this year. Getting fingering weight yarn to behave in a crochet pattern was a labor of love and so worth it.

I wanted to challenge myself again and found the perfect opportunity when I was approached via IG direct message from Jake of Kenyarn. Jake is a young indie dyer based on the east coast who likes to have fun with color. I sent him some inspirational photos and the result was two skeins of a gorgeous ice blue yarn.

After many attempts, the perfect shawl emerged! The Coles River Kerchief, named for the Bristol County, Massachusetts landmark, is an asymmetrical shawl with alternate bands of lace and solid stitches. Due to special shaping techniques, the shawl measures 77 inches wide but only 19 inches deep. The pattern is written recipe style, allowing makers to personalize their shawls by adjusting dimensions.

So, how much is the yarn going to cost? I have never seen a CAL that has a fee. The fee and yarn cost will be a deciding factor for almost everyone interested. Also (I’m a huge nerd) is it legal to put up a drawing of sorts that one has to pay entry for? Like with cereal giveaways there is a “free” way to enter. Just a thought. Thanks.

Hi Sarah! Thanks so much for your questions. Jake from Kenyarn will have kits, but I’m not privy to how much he plans to price them at. It’s easy to swap out yarn for this CAL though. Any two skeins of fingering weight yarn will do perfectly. As for the giveaways, there are merit conditions on the contests, so they’re on the up and up 🙂

Awesome! Thanks for the info and I’ll keep my eyes open for the pricing. I love the blue speckle so hopefully I can get it.

    Hello Toni,
May I start by telling you that I just adore you! You sound so nice and fun and full of life. 🙂
I am a knitter, but I recently decided to learn how to crochet with books and videos.
So far I made a coupke of slippers, dishcloths, simple tops for my daughter.
Do you think I will be able to accomplish this super beautiful scarf even though I am a newbie with crochet?
And I also am a French speaking girl, from Montreal, Quebec, Canada so I apologize in advance for any mistakes I make while writing.
    Kiss, kiss.

Toni’s explanations are well detailed, she is a joy to learn from.
I am learning Tunisan crochet based on her youtube videos.

Vous n’aurez pas de problème à la suivre et elle se fera un plaisir de vous aider si jamais vous ête mal prise. Je suis de la rive-sud de Montréal aussi.

      Have an awsome day,

Oooh! Is there any way to participate without using Facebook? I don’t use the platform. Thanks and I love your designs!

Hi Christina! Absolutely! Facebook, Instagram, and Ravelry are optional platforms to participate. All you need is to sign up with an email address that you check regularly. I hope to see you in the CAL!

OMG I am going to sign up. Do you think lions brand wrap Star is a good yarn for this project.? It said that the project will need fingering yarn. I am not sure wrap Star is fingering yarn. Thank you Tony. I love everything you do. 💕

Hello darling! Wrap Star might be a little heavy for this project. You’ll want a yarn that is a category 1, Super Fine, for this project. Lion Brand’s Amazing Lace might be a good choice!

Hi Toni! I’m from Montreal, Quebec, Canada and this is the first time I’ve signed up for a CAL, so I’m excited, especially since it’s with you. Been following you for a while now (I’ve only been crocheting for about a year now) I love watching you and and I love your patterns. Almost finished my first (not last) flatiron shawl and started the Adore shawl…. love it.
My question about the CAL….. is the $15US fee to cover joining only? Pattern, support, FB etc., etc. There is no yarn involved in this fee? First time doing this so still not sure how it all works. Thanking you in advance and looking forward to making the shawl. Jane (janie1261)

Hi Jane! I’m so excited to have you as part of the CAL! You are correct – the CAL fee does not include any yarn. It is for the pattern, access to our groups, videos, email list discounts, and contests. I did include some yarn suggestions (including low cost alternatives) in the Welcome video, if that helps!

Hi Natasha! Thanks so much for your interest. I’m sorry to say that the CAL is now closed, but I hope you’ll try the Coles River Kerchief when the pattern comes out next month!

Hello. I just discovered this program/pattern today & love it. I am newly returned to crocheting after an absence of a few decades. Love the new wools. I would like to know where I could find this pattern and the wool. The wool looks so yummy! I hope it is still available. But if not I would still like to try the pattern.
    Thanks for any help.
