DIY Handmade Crochet Home Decor

Every crocheter has that one project that they revisit over and over again. For me, it is crochet blankets, hands down. I love the meditative stitching and beautiful all-over patterns of crochet afghans, blankets, and throws. Over the years, I’ve crocheted dozens of blankets, some to gift but most to keep. I needed somewhere adorable to store my blanket stash. Enter the Fireside Basket.

The Fireside Basket was designed to be a simple make with small accents and design features to make it stand out. This sturdy crochet blanket basket is made with two strands of Lion Brand Hue + Me yarn held double throughout. The basket gets more reinforcement by folding the top edge. And the finishing touch is a strip of bobble ribbon, crocheted with the same yarn.

RIBBON

ROW 1: With one strand of A and smaller hook, fsc 127 (or the necessary multiple of 6 + 1 to reach around the top of the basket), turn.

ROW 4: Ch 1, sc in first st, BO across row, fasten off after last sc.

ASSEMBLY & FINISHING

OPTIONAL STEPS:

  1. Fold the color B section of the SIDE toward the right side of the basket.
  2. Fill the basket with blankets and/or towels and measure the circumference around the top of the basket.
  3. Steam block the ribbon to measure one inch shorter than the circumference of the basket. Focus on extending the bobbles away from the single crochet portion of the ribbon while blocking.

REQUIRED STEPS:

  1. Weave in all ends.
  2. Pin the ribbon to the basket around the circumference of the top using t-pins or sewing pins, ensuring that the ends of the ribbon are at the back of the basket.
  3. Use a length of color A to join the ribbon to the basket using a running stitch. Push the tapestry need through to the inside of the basket when seaming.
  4. Steam block the finished basket (optional)
  5. Weave in any remaining ends.

Hi – the pattern is not advertised as a free download. It is mentioned multiple times in the blog post that the free version if available to VIEW at the bottom of the post. Sorry for any confusion. You can purchase a downloadable version from my shop.

For the fireside basket, how do you think the pattern would go with a blanket yarn?
Would you think it should be held double with 2 blankets yarns, or can they be mixed. Or is blanket yarn Sturdy enough to hold up without the double ?
(Asking since I have blanket yarn in my stash)

    • Toni L.Toni L. says

Hi Gilly – I think it’s definitely worth a try. I don’t have much experience with blanket yarn, but I would try it held double and follow the pattern as written. You may have to go up a hook size to make sure the tension doesn’t irritate your hands or wrists. Let me know how it goes 🙂

  4. AvatarMatt says

I’m loving this pattern, but when I make the spiral for the bottom, after round 14, my base is only measuring about 12″ diameter and I can’t figure out what’s wrong. I’ve been trying to stitch as loosely as possible. Any tips would be appreciated!

      • AvatarJamie says

Hi, I am having the exact same issue. I am using 2 strands of yarn. I even redid it with a size 12mm hook but it is still only 12″ diameter. Any other tips would be appreciated!

        • Toni L.Toni L. says

I took a look at the post, and there seems to have been an old version uploaded. The base should extend to 14 rounds. That should get you to the right diameter. Give it a go, and let me know how it works out.
