Ok. I’m going to be really honest about what inspired the Haze Handbag. One word: CLUELESS! I know you remember that classic mid-90’s deep dive into the lives of oblivious Beverly Hills high-schoolers. It’s one of those films that is so bad, it’s amazing. And can we talk about the fashion? Gingham, florals, and crushed velvet were everywhere. Not to mention all of the faux fur.

While their intellect left something to be desired, the characters’ style in Clueless encourages risk, playfulness, and youth. The Haze Handbag does all those things and more. It’s big, bright, and bold in all the best ways. But it’s more than just its looks. The Haze Handbag is a truly practical purse to store all of the day’s most important necessities.
To make the Haze Handbag, you’ll need 6 balls of Lion Brand Go For Faux Thick & Quick, a category 7 jumbo weight yarn now available at select JOANN stores. Made of 100% polyester, it’s cuddly soft and squishy. When using it for crochet, Go For Faux Thick & Quick creates a dense fabric that is all fluff – you can’t even tell it’s crochet because the stitches are hidden! Since this bag is made with jumbo weight yarn, it works up quickly, so you can have a handbag made in time for going out this evening.

The Haze Handbag is made by crocheting a rectangle using jumbo weight faux fur yarn. The rectangle is then folded and seamed to create the pocket of the purse as well as the front flap. Metal findings are attached to either side of the bag to hold the straps. A long strap is crocheted as well, looped through the findings, and the ends are sewn together to give the bag it’s convertible capability – wear it as a handbag or a crossbody bag.

Haze Handbag
MATERIALS:
– 6 balls Lion Brand Go For Faux Thick & Quick yarn in the color Pink Poodle
– 11.5mm crochet hook (like this one!)
– 2- 35mm metal O-rings* (Amazon)
– Scissors
– Tapestry needle
*The original Haze Handbag was made with rectangle rings to hold the strap. While rectangle rings work, the soft fur yarn causes them to slide out of their correct orientation. Use O-rings instead for a smoother connection between the bag and the strap.
FINISHED SIZE:
11.75” wide x 8” tall
ABBREVIATIONS:
- Ch = chain
- Sc = single crochet
- St = stitch
Handbag
ROW 1: Ch 16, sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across.
ROWS 2-34: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Fasten off after Row 34
Weave in all ends.
Fold the rectangle widthwise into three panels with the following dimensions:
- Flap = 6”
- Back = 9”
- Front = 8”
Whipstitch seam the Front and Back along the sides to create the pocket of the bag.
Whipstitch the O-rings to either side of the pocket near the top.
Strap
ROW 1: Ch 65 loosely. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across. Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.
With the right side of the bag facing you, insert one end of the strap through the left O-ring from left to right. Thread the strap toward the right O-ring. Insert through the right O-ring from left to right.
Bring the opposite side of the strap to meet the end that is threaded through the rings. Using the leftover tail, whip stitch the ends of the strap together to form a large loop.
When styling, keep the straps the same length and hold them together for a handbag or shoulder bag. Lengthen one strap to convert into a crossbody bag.
