Crochet for the Home

One of my favorite parts of being a crochet designer is making practical pieces that I can use around my home. My living room is filled with plenty of blankets, wall hangings, and planters that I’ve made by hand.

When it comes to baskets, I’m a big fan of making them myself. I originally designed the Jenna Stash Basket in collaboration with some of my favorite makers. The Jessie Stash Basket is a riff on that original pattern, substituting chunky wool yarn for cotton and making the base from yarn instead of wood.

Crochet a Chunky Two-Handled Basket

When I set out to design the Jessie Stash Basket, I knew I wanted something with a cozy look but I needed it to be sturdy as well. Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick was an obvious choice. Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick is easy to find at your local craft store and comes in plenty of colors to match your style.

Has anyone made this holding two worsted weight strands together? Wondering if it would be close enough to the thick n quick and which hook would be best if so.

      • Toni L.Toni L. says

Hi! If you wanted to use worsted instead of super bulky, I’d recommend holding 6 strands of worsted together, at least, to achieve close to the gauge of the finished basket. I’d try an 8mm hook to start and adjust as needed.

  1. AvatarDarlene says

I’ve made one basket, using the chunky yarn (but not wool, allergic) and I just created a bag using three strands of worsted and going until it was about 10 inches tall, then adding the handles. I also added two more rows for the handles (in pattern stitch too!) because I knew carrying it around more than the basket, I wanted something a little more sturdy than the three-strand handle gave me. I love this pattern and will probably make many, many more! I purchased the pdf so I didn’t have to hunt for the webpage each time. Thanks for a great pattern!

    Hi Toni,
I made 1 of these with the Wool Ease yarn and LOVE it. I saw you talking about using the Big Twist Textile yarn but didn’t see the whole story. How much do you need for the Jessie? And how do you adjust the pattern and yarn amount to make it a bit taller?

    • Toni L.Toni L. says

Hi! I made mine in 3 colors. I used 2 cakes for each color, but used a very small amount of the second cake for the last 2 colors. I still held the yarn double, and I used an 8mm crochet hook for this version.

  3. AvatarKate S-R says

that basket looks great – looking into making one as a present for friend – do U think its possible to do it in 2 colours – meaning stripy ??? Do the rounds finish or do they go spiral without direct finish? What would be the best way of changing colours so it doesn’t look misaligned? Sorry so many questions – I’m still a beginner so can’t see directly from pattern – and about to order yarn for it.

    • Toni L.Toni L. says

Hi! I love the idea of doing this in multiple colors. The rounds are worked in a spiral. So, if you want to change colors, I’d recommend doing it in the middle of one of the long sides. That would make that the back side, since the color changes would be visible.

  4. AvatarOlivia Winter says

Loved this pattern! So easy to follow and to make, especially with the YouTube tutorial (I learned a new stitch!). I used a 100% acrylic yarn which looks like it was stiffer to work with than your work on the video, but it turned out beautifully. I did more rows up the side to make it a little taller, too. Thanks, Toni!

  5. AvatarBri says

Love this! I was just playing around with two yarns I wasn’t sure what to do with, so mine ended up smaller. It’s adorable and I love it! Will definitely be making more. I love your patterns and your tutorials are SO helpful! 💕

  6. AvatarRRR says

Round 13 – the free instructions don’t have the waistcoat stitch prior to the 13 single crochets the way it shows in the video.
Had a blast with this! Thanks!

    • Toni L.Toni L. says

Yes, it does. It’s right at the beginning of that line of instructions. It’s listed as (Wcs 1, sc BLO 1) to the first ch-sp. Please let me know if that’s unclear.

  7. AvatarKaren says

    Hi
I am a novice but I am trying this pattern with thiner yarn just to get my head around pattern. I am stuck on the last round of base and first round of sides. When i do the sc in back loop around the edge it creates doesnt meet each other. I am not sure what i am doing wrong, can you post a photo of the underside of the basket?.

    • Toni L.Toni L. says

Hi darling. I’m having trouble understanding the issue you’re having. Would you mind sending a message to [email protected]? We can help much better via email. Or it might help to take a look at the tutorial video.

  8. AvatarLauren says

Love the pattern! If I wanted to make a larger basket, would I just have to repeat round 3 more times or does the pattern completely change?
    Thanks!

  9. AvatarMariko says

Toni, thank you for the amazing pattern and video! I did one of your smaller circular baskets a month or two ago and got a hankering for another basket so tried this one and loved it! I ended up doing it with a greenish blue bottom and an oatmeal middle and then going back to the blue for the top and am loving how it came out!!!

A funny note is that when I did the other basket, I was using yarn over exclusively but this time I couldn’t figure out why the basket wasn’t working for me! Then I realized I had developed yarn under habits which make x shaped stitches and no wonder I couldn’t get the middle of that shape for the waistcoat stitch! Went back and did my round with yarn over and was able to do the pattern!

    Thanks again!
