In that time, I’ve gotten a lot of questions about Tunisian crochet. Like, how to get started, what patterns to try as a beginner, and how to do different stitches. But there’s one question I get all the time that I haven’t answered yet:
“What are your favorite Tunisian crochet hooks?”
The Tunisian crochet hook you choose can make or break your experience with this technique. Today, I’m sharing my top 5 Tunisian crochet hook sets and why I love (or just like) all of them!

5 – Addi Click Interchangeable Crochet Hooks

The Addi Click Tunisian crochet hook set comes with 8 hooks ranging in size from 3.5mm to 8mm. Hooks come in a leatherette case with snap closures. Smaller hooks are a brushed aluminum; larger hooks are a thick resin with glitter inside.
PROS:
- Aesthetically pleasing
- Flexible cords
- Longer than normal hooks
CONS:
- Boye-style hook (tapered hook with shallow, rounded hook head)
- Smaller hooks can be slippery

4 – Knitter’s Pride Dreamz Interchangeable Hooks
Current price: $42; full price: $53. Get these hooks on Amazon.
The Knitters Pride Dreamz Interchangeable hooks feature 8 hooks ranging in size from 3.5mm – 8mm. All hooks are inside the clear plastic case with button closure, along with compatible cords, stoppers, keys, and connectors. The hooks are made from an unknown wood with a thin coating on them (unconfirmed).
PROS:
- Pointy hook heads
- Deep hook to catch stitches
- Lightweight & smooth
CONS:
- Key tightening system
- Ugly packaging
- Stiff cords
3 – ChiaoGoo T-Spin Tunisian Hooks
Current price: $110; full price: $136. Get these hooks on Amazon.
The Chiaogoo T-Spin hook set features 11 hooks ranging in size from 3.5mm – 10mm. All hooks are nestled inside a sturdy cloth zipper pouch, with each hook having it’s own marked place. The front pocket of the zipper pouch includes Chiaogoo’s signature lace cords, stoppers, keys, adapters, and connectors. The hooks are made from 100% bamboo with metal connections at the end.
PROS:
- Extended hook sizes
- Uncoated hooks are still smooth and lightweight
- Slightly pointy hook head
CONS:
- Key tightening system
- Sharp keys
- Large hook adapter
- EXPENSIVE!
2 – Tulip Carry T Interchangeable Hooks
Current price: $118. Get these hooks on Walmart. Alternately, get this similar set from Clover for $68 on Amazon.
The Tulip Carry T hook set features 10 hooks ranging in size from 3.5mm – 9mm (including a 7mm!). Each hook is held in place by an elastic band inside a faux leather zipper pouch. The inside mesh pouch includes 3 compatible cords, stoppers, a connector, metal tapestry needles, and a Tulip gauge tool with yarn cutter. The hooks are made from 100% bamboo with metal connections at the end.
PROS:
- Rotating cord system
- Overall perfect shape, length, and depth
- Included gauge tool (can cut yarn and measure for gauge with included 2″ ruler)
CONS:
- Pricey! (Try this alternate set from Clover)
- Hard to find in retail stores or online
1 – Denise Interchangeable Crochet Hook Set
Get this exact set from the Denise website for $50, or get the Denise 2Go 2-hook set from Amazon for $75 (best deal!).

The Denise Interchangeable crochet hook set features 12 hooks ranging in size from 3.75mm – 15mm. This set also includes 4 stoppers, 2 connectors, and 7 cords. The set comes in a classic clamshell case and the components are held in place with a plastic mold. The hooks themselves are made of a lightly textured plastic.
PROS:
- Amazing value for the number of components you get
- Each hook has a thumbrest, like you find on a traditional crochet hook
- Easy and inexpensive to replace hooks, cords, stoppers, and connectors
CONS:
- Short hooks (larger hooks can be tricky to maneuver)
- Stiff cords
- Joins come loose every now and then
Which hook set is best for you?
Choosing a Tunisian crochet hook set is a very personal process. Things that are a dealbreaker for me might be just what you’re looking for. Every crocheter crochets differently, so it will take some experimentation to decide which hook set (or sets!) is the best fit for you.
If I had to recommend just one set, it would be the Denise Interchangeable. I’ve been singing praises about these hooks since day one. They’re an amazing deal, you get basically all the hooks you need in one place, and they crochet like a dream. The set I have isn’t on Amazon right now, but this Denise 2Go set is actually better – it comes with 2 hooks of each size so you can do double-ended Tunisian crochet!

I may have tried Tunisian a decade or so ago. I’d like to incorporate more crocheting into my crafting for 2020. I did not know Add I and Knitter’s Pride had crochet hooks. They must be lovely to work with.
I’m new to tunisian crochet, but I really like it. The only thing is, is I don’t like the feel of plastic or bamboo hooks. I prefer aluminum. These type of hooks with cords so I can crochet an afghan. Recommendations please
I haven’t been able to find any quality corded metal Tunisian crochet hooks. Sorry I can’t help 🙁

If you ever get the chance, maybe you could use your influence to get some maker to make aluminum hooks with cords… I am loving tunisian crochet, and would love to do larger projects, but I refuse to use anything but aluminum. I’m glad to hear I am not the only one! There is a market, for the manufacturer who is willing to meet us!! Thanks for all you do! LOVE your stuff!!

Hi Toni, thanks so much for this review, I have been hunting for a good Tunisian set. Although you & I have different hook loves (I’m a Clover Amour lover), your pros and cons were very helpful to me.
I currently own the smaller set of Denise hooks & found I couldn’t stand the short hooks in my hand, & I have small hands. They are gathering dust. :/ I tried just 1 of the Chiagoo & did not care for the “drag” I felt the bamboo had. I also own the Dreamz set you show here. Something to note – the hook size printed on the hook wears off very quickly. I only did about 3 rows of a cowl & noticed my size was gone. To save the rest of my set I put a coat of clear nail polish on the rest of my hooks. Working so far. Also, some of the hooks feel like they have a coating & glide nicely, others…not so much. Overall I don’t love them. And as you mentioned in your reviews, I do miss the thumb rest.
I have been eyeing the Addi set for a long time, but wasn’t sure I would love them, and lets face it, I already have a “graveyard” of Tunisian hooks around here. I think I would like the feel of the Addi’s, & the length. But I don’t see any of the larger hook sizes to supplement the set, so that would seriously limit my makes. I do currently have up to 13mm in the Dreamz.

You are one beautiful person. I have only been doing Tunisian crochet for a few months but have been crocheting since I was 10 years old. I was a tom boy who climb trees with the best of them and took my crochet hook with me. I am now 64 years young and so love your free video for the tunisian smock stitch. I have to say it took me a bit to catch on to the smock stitch, why, I don’t know. But, I think I finally got it. I wrote the first and second row instructions on paper so I could refer back to it. Us red heads are just as bad as those blondes when it comes to common since. I just wanted to tell you THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP. Without beautiful people like you, some of us would never know.
I think I’ve tried every hook that’s not made of bone or indagered wood to see what works best for my RA hand pain. Thank you for your insight on Tunisian hooks. I actually got really irritated with the overly bulbous head (I’m trying not to giggle just there…) of the ones from Knit Picks, and your video from your 1st Tunisian video made me look into Denise brand…ahhh heaven. Before that I even tried the ones with oxygen tubing and I have the giant one from Glenda Winkleman and it’s pretty fun. I digress, love the info and I must admit that I had looked into a couple of your CALs and was salty by the price. I apologize. Seeing the depth of your work and just how you keep on keeping on had inspired me. At the end of the day we do have to support ourselves, and there is no better way than to lift yourself up (women) than lifting others at the same time. I was looking for a video on basic tunisian crochet and came across some that were unclear and/or of poor video/sound quality. I was just about to give up when I found your video. Your instructions are so clear, you go at a great pace and have closeups that really help me see what I need to do. And the quality of your video and audio are wonderful. After watching a couple of your videos – and trying some samples – I checked out your blog. You have such a nice smile and I can tell you love crocheting. I was interested in the hooks you were using so I checked out this blog post. I have three tunisian hooks I inherited from my mother but they are only in smaller sizes and I wanted to try the 8mm you use. I have no problem with the key lock system since I am an avid knitter. In addition, I just watched your absolute beginning guide to Tunisian Crochet video. Thank you for your in detail instructions. Hi Toni! Love this review as it is VERY helpful to see the pros and cons of each type of Tunisian crochet hook sets. (I’m prefer Susan Bates hooks too!) I recently just learned how to do Tunisian crochet through your video (!!!) and looking to invest in a set. It seems that the Denise set is your go-to for Tunisian crochet projects and I will definitely get a set of that. I’m also looking for a set made out of wood/bamboo. You mentioned the Tulip and Clover sets were comparable, but would like your thoughts regarding similarities and differences. The price for the Clover set is certainly much more attractive than the Tulip set, but I wonder if they feel similar as well. Hi Kelly! I’m so glad the post is helpful. I now have both the Tulip and the Clover sets and they feel nearly identical to me. The only benefit of the Tulip set is that it has a 9mm hook in it. I sometimes use that size for bulky weight yarn projects. But I use worsted weight the most and have been using my Clover set all the time.

Hi Toni, I’m new to Tunisian crochet and this was a very helpful post. I crocheted briefly as a child and was inspired to pick up a hook again when I was expecting my first grandchild almost 14 years ago. My first project was supposed to be a little hooded blanket but the finished product left much to be desired. 😂Fortunately, my technique has improved over the years and my finished projects actually started looking like the pattern image. Tunisian crochet has been an enjoyable change and I look forward to completing many successful projects! I tried the TC starter sets from your blog and practiced several of the stitches from your tutorials. I had use an emory board to sand down the hook bed on the larger sizes from the straight hook set because they kept snagging my yarn. No more snagging but there is a lot of drag, especially with the return pass. Haven’t tried the corded set yet. I’m sure I will eventually invest in a higher quality set once I am more comfortable with my technique. I am so glad I found you! I love TLYC and you are amazing! Thank you!

I just want to let your fans know that I was able to find the Tulip Carry T set on Walmart.com for $118 with $0.75 cent shipping! They arrived in good time and are everything you described; at that price point they blow away the ChiaoGoo with all their extra pieces and sharp screw pins. (I also have a smaller Denise set that I very much enjoy. It is so compact!) Hope this helps someone. (Please know that I did try and use your Tulip link, but it is did not work for me and I have had my Denise set for years.)

LOVE the pointiness of the green Tunisian crochet hook in the top photo, but none of the hooks I can find online seem to look pointy at all 🙁

I have a set of the Denise Interchangeable T-hooks but didn’t care for them. Yes, I liked how easy it is to change the hook form the cord. However, I just feel the yarn really doesn’t slide easily on the hook. I guess it’s because I’m used to metal or wood. I’ve tossed/replaced all my acrylic or plastic needles/hooks because I didn’t like how they felt in my hands. I did invest in the Knitters Pride set. While I have their ‘Karbonz‘ dpns and a few of their ‘Zing’ fixed needles which are really nice, I didn’t like the Tunisian set at all. Could be because I’m lefty and manipulating the hook was awkward; I kept dropping the yarn off the hook. Strange, I don’t have that issue with any size of my Clover crochet hooks. (NOTE: I knit both English throwing with right hand and Continental, as well as backwards with the left. However, for the life of me I just can’t crochet with my right hand!)
I was considering the Denise set and finally bought them after seeing your review. I’ve been using them since they were brought to my desk Thursday, lol.
