Demystifying Tunisian Crochet in the Round

When I first encountered Tunisian crochet in the round (TiTR), I thought I would never master it. It seemed so complicated, and I couldn’t wrap my head around it. But, with some simple guidance and a few of my favorite colors, I got the hang of it pretty quickly!

To create Tunisian crochet in the round squares, use a double-ended hook. These hooks allow you to complete the Forward and Return passes easily. Like most new Tunisian crochet stitches, getting started can be a little fiddly. But, once you get past Round 2, things begin to clear up.

MATERIALS

  • Worsted weight yarn – colors B and C
  • 6.5mm crochet hook
  • 6.5mm double-ended Tunisian crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Locking stitch markers
  • Tapestry needle

FINISHED SIZE

12″ square after border and blocking

SPECIAL STITCHES

  • Increase (inc): (Tunisian knit 1, yarn over, Tunisian knit 1) in next yo.
  • Return Pass (RetP): (Yarn over, pull through 2 loops) until 3 loops of Forward Pass color and 1 loop of Return Pass color remain on hook. In Round 2 and beyond, pause the Forward Pass and complete the Return Pass when there are too many loops on the hook.

PATTERN NOTE: Two different colors are used throughout – the first color will be used for the Forward Pass, and the second color will be used for the Return Pass. Have separate balls of yarn for each color.

INSTRUCTIONS

SETUP

ROUND 1 With B 6.5mm crochet hook, start a MR, (ch 1, 8sc) in MR, close MR, continue to work in a spiral. (8 sc)

ROUND 2 2sc in each sc around. (16 sc)

BODY

ROUND 1

  • With 6.5mm double-ended hook, sl st in next st,
  • Yo, pull up a lp in the same st as sl st,
  • *Pull up a lp in each of the next 3 sts*, (pull up a lp, yo, pull up a lp) in the next st, rep * to * (12 lps on hook), turn for Return Pass,
  • With C, yo, pull through 1 lp, (yo, pull through 2 lps) until 3 lps of B and 1 lp of C rem on hook, turn for Forward Pass,
  • [(Pull up a lp, yo, pull up a lp) in next st, pull up a lp in each of the next 3 sts] 2 times,
  • Turn for Return Pass, RetP.

ROUND 2 Tss 1, inc in next yo (mark the yo of this increase as the beginning of the round – this marker should be different from other markers used in square), (tss to next yo, inc in yo, mark the yo of the inc) around, tss in each tss to end of round.

REMAINING BODY ROUNDS Tss each tss, inc in each yo. Move markers to the yo of each inc as needed.

Rep until the square measures 11.5″. This took me 15 rounds. End last round 1 stitch before the yarn over at the beginning of the round.

BIND OFF

  • Complete RetP until there is only 1 lp of B and 1 lp of C on the hook,
  • With RS facing, slip the lp of B through the lp of C. Fasten off C.
  • Continuing with B and RS facing, (sl st each tss as for tss, and each yo as for tks) around. Join with a sl st in the first sl st of the round.
  • Sl st in next st – this places you in the corner.

Do not cut yarn. Proceed to Standard Border.

STANDARD BORDER

  • Change to 6.5mm traditional crochet hook and ensure the square faces right side up.
  • Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), single crochet 35 stitches evenly across the first edge of the square, placing increases and decreases where needed. At corner, ch 2 and rotate to work along the next edge.
  • Single crochet 35 stitches evenly across the edge, placing increases and decreases where needed. At corner, ch 2 and rotate to work along the next edge.
  • Repeat the last step for the remaining 2 sides. At the end of the round, join with a slip stitch in the first single crochet of the round. Fasten off and block your finished square to 12″ x 12″.
