The Perfect Tunisian Crochet Sampler Afghan
I started my love affair with Tunisian crochet wayyyyy back when, after learning the basics at a yarn convention. Since then, I’ve scoured every blog post and published book I could find on the subject. Want to learn Tunisian crochet without all the hassle? Now is the perfect time to add this addictive technique to your toolkit! with the use of my Tunisian sampler afghan
The Tunisian Snowy Sampler Blanket helps you absorb the magic of Tunisian crochet without jumping from one blog post or tutorial video to the next. The different stitches and techniques in this masterpiece will engage both determined novices and experienced makers.

Sampler blankets are a maker’s secret weapon for stocking their crafty toolkit with the skills to make nearly any project. Unlike most patterns that focus on just one stitch or technique, samplers break down many techniques and combine them into a cohesive and usable finished project. For the Tunisian Snowy Sampler, each of the 20 squares brings you one step closer to mastering these exciting skills.

Blanket Materials
It is my pleasure to partner with the homies at Lion Brand for the yarn used in the Tunisian Snowy Sampler Blanket. I used Lion Brand’s Pound of Love, a gigantic one-pound skein of 100% acrylic, worsted-weight yarn. I used one skein each of four different colors to add lively energy to this crochet sampler.
Get the Tunisian Snowy Sampler all-in-one kit from Lion Brand HERE.
Here’s a breakdown of how much I used of each color:
- Color A (shown in Cadet). I used one skein, approximately 785 total yards.
- Color B (shown in Antique White). I used one skein, approximately 735 total yards.
- Color C (shown in Olive). I used one skein, approximately 765 total yards.
- Color D (shown in Terracotta). I used one skein, approximately 590 total yards.
Yarn Color Combinations
Choosing the right color combinations at the beginning of your project will ensure you love the end result. I focused on one neutral color, and then incorporated the remaining three colors evenly throughout the squares. Experiment with your personal style, or draw inspiration from color combinations on Pinterest until you find the four-color combination you love.
Here are some options I pulled using the original yarn – Lion Brand’s Pound of Love.
Snowy Day – Cadet, Antique White, Olive, and Terracotta

Love Birds – Cerise, Sugar Cookie, Waterfall, and Honey Bee

Hay Ride – Pumpkin, Terracotta, Fern, and Sugar Cookie

Cabin Fever – Olive, Sleet, Stone, and Mocha

Unicorn Daydream – Pastel Blue, Pink Salt, Pastel Green, and Quartz

If Pound of Love isn’t your jam, or you can’t access these yarns easily, any comparable worsted weight yarn in the above yardage should do. Here are some options I recommend:
- Brava Worsted from WeCrochet
- Amigo XL from Hobbii
- Plymouth Yarn Encore Worsted from LoveCrafts
- Universal Yarn Uptown Worsted from LoveCrafts
- Stylecraft Special Aran from Wool Warehouse
- Paintbox Simply Aran from LoveCrafts
Crochet Hooks

To make the Tunisian Snowy Sampler Blanket, you will need 3 different crochet hooks:
- 6.5mm Tunisian crochet hook with 16″ or 24″ cord
- 6.5mm double-ended Tunisian crochet hook (see Notes below)
- 6.5mm traditional crochet hook.
Different hooks are used within the pattern to achieve the proper gauge. The 6.5mm corded hook is used to make all of the squares except one. The double-ended hook makes the Tunisian in the Round (TiTR) square. See further Notes below for alternatives if you cannot source a double-ended Tunisian crochet hook. The 6.5mm crochet hook is used for the border on the squares, seaming them together, and then adding the final border around the blanket.
You can use the hooks of your choice for this project. Individual traditional hooks can be purchased online here. I’m a big fan of this interchangeable set, and you can find a double-ended 6.5mm hook here.

Pattern Notes:
- Tunisian in the Round uses a double-ended crochet hook and works in a spiral from the center out. You can use a straight 6.5mm double-ended hook, a corded hook with a 6.5mm hook on each end, or a corded hook with a 6.5mm hook on one end (Forward Pass) and a 6.0mm hook on the opposite end (Return Pass).
- Complete the Standard Return Pass (RetP) as follows unless otherwise instructed in pattern: Ch 1, (yo, pull through 2 lps) until 1 lp remains on hook.
- Complete the Last Tunisian Stitch (Lts) as follows: Insert hook under BOTH vertical bars of the last st, yo, pull up a lp.
- Use the 6.5mm corded hook for all squares unless otherwise instrcuted.
- Number in parentheses at the end of some rows indicate the total number of stitches in that row.
- Portions of the pattern are written in crochet shorthand. For example, “sc 2” means to single crochet in each of the next 2 stitches, while “2sc” means to place 2 single crochet into the next stitch (increase made).
- Tutorial videos for all techniques are available. Click THIS LINK to access the tutorials.

PART 2: ASSEMBLY + BORDER
Find the step-by-step instructions for assembling squares and adding the final border HERE.
Layout
Use the grid below to lay out the squares of your blanket. You can change the layout as desired, and even add in squares from the Crochet Amour Sampler (squares in both blankets are the same size).

Assembly
With the right sides of the squares facing in the layout of your choice, use the 6.5mm hook and any color to slip stitch seam squares together, working in the back loops only. After seaming, weave in all ends.

Final Border
Special Stitch – Camel Stitch (cam): hdc in 3rd lp of the next st.
Round 1 With C, join with a sl st in any corner ch-2 sp of the blanket, ch 1, hdc in the same sp as join, *hdc across to next corner ch-2 sp, placing 1 hdc in each sc and hdc2tog over the ch-2 sps of neighboring squares, (hdc, ch 2, hdc) in corner ch-2 sp; rep from * around, join with a sl st in the first hdc of round and cc to B. Fasten off C.
Round 2 With B, cam in same st as join, *cam across row to corner ch-2 sp, (hdc, ch 1, hdc) in corner ch-2 sp; rep from * around, join with a sl st in first hdc of round and cc to A. Fasten off B.
Round 3 With A, repeat Round 2 and cc to D at end of round. Fasten off A.
Round 4 With D, sl st loosely in the 3rd lp of each hdc and (sl st, ch 2, sl st) in each ch-2 sp around. Fasten off at end of round and finish with an invisible join.
Finishing
- Weave in all remaining ends.
- Steam block to final dimensions, paying close attention to seams and border.

Hi, Sunshine
There are no instructions for the Knit Mesh Stitch. There’s a picture of it, but below are instructions for the Snowy Square only. Is there another link for it?
Wow, what a catch! Nearly 6 months after this pattern came out, and you’re the first to mention it. Thanks so much – I’ll get that updated.
Is there an update for the knit mesh stitch yet? This is the only square that I need to finish the blanket.
Thanks so much for alerting us to this discrepancy. The blog post has been updated with the correct pattern + tutorial 🙂
I am so sorry but I can’t find the free pattern. I’ve found the tutorials and they are great .
Hey there, Sue! The free pattern for each square can be found by scrolling down and clicking the links to individual blogposts. It should be right below the “PART 1: CREATE THE SQUARES” section. I hope that helps 🙂 Please let us know if you need anything else!
