Corner to corner, or C2C, crochet is a staple crochet technique. But did you know you can do corner to corner with Tunisian crochet as well? For this technique, start with a small number of stitches and steadily increase to your desired width. When you are ready to square off your project, replace the increases with decreases. The result is a perfect square of Tunisian simple stitches.

I first fell in love with this stitch when making my Bias Tunisian Baby Blanket [free pattern HERE]. I had to bring it back as a standalone tutorial for makers who want to try this stitch pattern for other projects.

MATERIALS

  • Worsted weight yarn – color C
  • 6.5mm Tunisian crochet hook with 16″ cord
  • 6mm crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle

FINISHED SIZE

12 x 12 inches square after blocking

GAUGE

The gauge varies for each square of the Tunisian Holiday Sampler Blanket. Reference the starting chain stitch multiple to make adjustments to your square. All squares should measure about 11.5″ square before the border is added.

ABBREVIATIONS

  • 2sc = 2 single crochet in the same stitch (increase made)
  • Cc = change color
  • Ch = chain
  • Lts = last Tunisian stitch (see Special Stitches below)
  • RetP = return pass
  • Sc = single crochet
  • Sc2tog = single crochet 2 together (decrease made)
  • St(s) = stitch(es)
  • Tfs = Tunisian full stitch
  • Tss = Tunisian simple stitch
  • Tss2tog = Tunisian simple stitch 2 together (see Special Stitches below)

SPECIAL STITCHES

  • Last Tunisian Stitch (Lts) – insert hook under BOTH vertical bars of the last stitch and complete as for Tunisian simple stitch
  • Tunisian Simple Stitch 2 Together (Tss2tog) = insert hook under the front vertical bars of the next 2 stitches, yarn over, pull up a loop through both stitches (decrease made).

BORDER NOTES

To ensure that all squares of the Tunisian Holiday Sampler Blanket will join evenly, apply the Standard Border. All squares need to have 35 single crochet stitches on each size. This means you will have to increase the number of edge stitches in some cases, and decrease the number of edge stitches in other places.

  • To increase the number of stitches along an edge, evenly place 2sc increases along the edge where needed.
  • To decrease the number of stitches along an edge, evenly place sc2tog decreases along the edge where needed.

INSTRUCTIONS

Increase Rows

ROW 1: With C and 6.5mm Tunisian crochet hook, ch 3, pull up a loop in the back bump of the 2nd ch from hook and the last st, RetP. (3 sts)

ROW 2: Tfs 1, tss 1, tfs 1, Lts, RetP. (5 sts)

ROW 3: Tfs 1, tss across row to last st, tfs 1, Lts, RetP. (7 sts)

Repeat Row 3 until the short edges measure 11.5″ when slightly stretched. My square had 25 rows and 51 stitches along the working row at this point.

Decrease Rows

ROW 1: Tss2tog, tss across row to last 3 sts, tss2tog, Lts, RetP.

Repeat Row 1 until the working row has 5 stitches.

NEXT ROW: Tss2tog, tss2tog over next st and BOTH loops of the last st, RetP. (3 sts)

LAST ROW: Insert hook as for tss in next st and BOTH loop of the last st, yo, pull through all loops on hook. Do not fasten off. Continue to border.

STANDARD BORDER

  1. Change to 6mm crochet hook and ensure the square is facing right side up.
  2. Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), single crochet 35 stitches evenly across the first edge of the square, placing increases and decreases where needed. At corner, ch 2 and rotate to work along the next edge.
  3. Single crochet 35 stitches evenly across the edge, placing increases and decreases where needed. At corner, ch 2 and rotate to work along the next edge.
  4. Repeat Step 3 for the remaining 2 sides. At the end of the round, join with a slip stitch in the first single crochet of the round. Fasten off and block your finished square to 12″ x 12″.

Hi Toni! I have become addicted to Tunisian crochet and really enjoy watching your video tutorials again and again until I can figure out how to do a stitch! Question about the tunisian hook with cable…do you have a video that shows how to properly use this system? I’m not sure how to manage keeping stitches on the hook vs. moving them to the cable.

    Thank you!

Your video has clear and easy to follow instructions. If you want to make a rectangle with the same bias pattern you would make one side even (no increases or decreases) while increasing on the other side. I have to use a stitch marker to be sure I’m keeping the same side even. When the longer side is the needed length begin to decrease on both sides. It doesn’t look right at first but it does turn out right. I took the idea from the double crochet corner to corner pattern.

I tried your pattern And it’s not working instead of creating a perfect square blanket I’ve now made a shawl please help me I’m extremely upset my yarn is too expensive to have this type of error

I’m not really clear on what shape you’re getting instead of a square. Are you saying you’re getting a triangle? Because it won’t become a square until the decrease rows. Feel free to email me a photo and I’m happy to help.

Thank you, Toni! I am making a set of dishcloths for my dad’s wife (I’m too old for a stepmom, lol) and this is precisely what I needed! I am new to tunisian and this came up in my Pinterest suggestions. Boy am I glad it did! Going to give this a whirl on a chain 10 to get the hang of it then go to town!

Thank you for this video! I just started working with Tunisian crochet about a month ago. It is so interesting and makes really nice dishcloths. Seeing it in C2C is just what I need to work more with it.

    Take care and be safe!

  7. AvatarKinga Watts says

Hi Toni, thank you for these clear instructions, I’ve just found Tunisian crochet and this will be my first project 🙂 However, I’d like to make a rectangle baby blanket instead of a perfect square, do you have any advise on how to do that please using the c2c method?
    Thank you in advance!

    • Toni L.Toni L. says

Absolutely – when you’re ready to start the triangle, decrease one at the beginning of the forward pass, and increase one at the end of the forward pass . That will start to create a rectangle. When the rectangle is done, move onto the instructions to decrease on both sides and close the corner. Hope that helps!

I fell in love with the dishcloth on the bias. I tried several times but was just missing a few steps each time….third time, they say is a charm!!! I finally finished a nice dishcloth…I’m so proud of myself, I watch your tutorials and got an aha moment!!!
