The Perfect Crochet Sampler Afghan
Crochet has sparked creativity in the hearts of millions for ages now. Many of us learn the basics from a beloved family member or your favorite YouTube instructor. But, did you know there are hundreds of crochet stitches and techniques you can master? Take your skills beyond the basics with the help of a crochet sampler afghan!
The Crochet Amour Sampler helps you absorb the magic of crochet without jumping from one blog post or tutorial video to the next. The different stitches and techniques in this masterpiece will engage both determined novices and experienced makers.

Sampler blankets are a maker’s secret weapon to stocking their crafty toolkit with the skills to make nearly any project. Unlike most patterns that focus on just one stitch or technique, samplers break down many techniques and combine them into a cohesive and useable finished project. For the Crochet Amour Sampler, each of the 20 squares brings you one step closer to mastering these exciting skills.

Blanket Materials
It is my pleasure to partner with the homies at Lion Brand for the yarn used in the Crochet Amour Sampler Blanket. I used Lion Brand’s Pound of Love, a gigantic one-pound skein of 100% acrylic, worsted-weight yarn. I used one skein each of four different colors to add lively energy to this crochet sampler.
Get the Crochet Amour Sampler all-in-one kit from Lion Brand HERE.
Here’s a breakdown of how much I used of each color:
- Color A (shown in Cerise). I used one skein, approximately 625 total yards.
- Color B (shown in Sugar Cookie). I used one skein, approximately 865 total yards.
- Color C (shown in Waterfall). I used one skein, approximately 690 total yards.
- Color D (shown in Honey Bee). I used one skein, approximately 715 total yards.
Yarn Color Combinations
Choosing the right color combinations at the beginning of your project will ensure you love the end result. I focused on one neutral color, and then incorporated the remaining three colors evenly throughout the squares. Experiment with your personal style, or draw inspiration from color combinations on Pinterest until you find the four-color combination you love.
Here are some options I pulled using the original yarn – Lion Brand’s Pound of Love.
Snowy Day – Cadet, Antique White, Olive, and Terracotta

Love Birds – Cerise, Sugar Cookie, Waterfall, and Honey Bee

Hay Ride – Pumpkin, Terracotta, Fern, and Sugar Cookie

Cabin Fever – Olive, Sleet, Stone, and Mocha

Unicorn Daydream – Pastel Blue, Pink Salt, Pastel Green, and Quartz

If Pound of Love isn’t your jam, or you can’t access these yarns easily, any comparable worsted weight yarn in the above yardage should do. Here are some options I recommend:
- Brava Worsted from WeCrochet
- Amigo XL from Hobbii
- Plymouth Yarn Encore Worsted from LoveCrafts
- Universal Yarn Uptown Worsted from LoveCrafts
- Stylecraft Special Aran from Wool Warehouse
- Paintbox Simply Aran from LoveCrafts
Crochet Hooks

To make the Crochet Amour Sampler Blanket, you will need 3 different crochet hooks:
- 5.5mm crochet hook
- 6mm crochet hook
- 6.5mm crochet hook
Different hooks are used within the pattern to achieve the proper gauge. The 5.5mm hook is used for the LOVE Square, which needs a tighter gauge to accomplish the intarsia colorwork technique. The 6mm and 6.5mm hooks are used to complete the remaining squares. The 6.5mm hook is then used to add a border to each individual square, to join the squares, AND to add the border around the blanket.
You can use the hooks of your choice for this project. Individual hooks can be purchased online here, or you can find a great set with all the sizes you need here. Looking to add some new hooks to your collection? Here are a few I’m loving right now:
- Furls Metal Streamlines ($26 each)
- WeCrochet Dots Hooks ($30 for 9 hooks)
- Clover Amour Crochet Hooks ($41 for 10 hooks)
Notions

Here is a list of additional supplies you’ll need to make your crochet sampler blanket:
- Scissors [LINK]
- Tape measure [LINK]
- Tapestry needle [LINK]
- Locking stitch marker [LINK]
- 5mm interchangeable knitting needle tip (optional) [LINK]
- Foam blocking mats [LINK]
- A steam iron or garment steamer [LINK]
- T-pins [LINK]
- Knit blockers (optional) [LINK]
Blanket Size:
62 inches x 54 inches after light steam blocking
Gauge:
Gauge will vary with each square. All squares list the starting chain (or starting foundation stitch) multiple – adjust as needed. All squares are approximately 11.5″ or 29 cm before adding the border.
Abbreviations:
This pattern uses US terms. Special Stitches are further defined in the pattern in which they appear.

Pattern Notes:
- Three different hooks are used to achieve proper gauge in this pattern, and each pattern identifies the hook used for the original square. Change hooks as needed to achieve the correct finished size.
- Most squares are started with a row of Foundation Stitches to ensure a flexible square. Learn this technique here. Conversely, chain the number of foundation stitches + 1, then single or double crochet into the 2nd chain from the hook and each remaining chain. This will replace the foundation row of stitches. Proceed to making the remainder of the square.
- Numbers in parentheses at the end of some rows indicate the total number of stitches in that row.
- Portions of this pattern are written in crochet shorthand. For example, “sc 2” means to single crochet in each of the next 2 stitches, while “2sc” means to place 2 single crochet in the next stitch (increase made).
- Tutorial videos for all techniques are available. Continue scrolling for individual links, or click THIS LINK for a playlist of tutorial videos for the Crochet Amour Sampler Blanket.

PART 2: ASSEMBLY + BORDER
Find the step-by-step instructions for assembling squares and adding the final border HERE.
Layout
Use the grid below to lay out the squares of your blanket. You can change the layout as desired, and even add in squares from the Tunisian Snowy Sampler (squares in both blankets are the same size).

Assembly
With the right sides of the squares facing in the layout of your choice, use the 6.5mm hook and any color to slip stitch seam squares together, working in the back loops only. After seaming, weave in all ends.

Final Border
Special Stitch – Camel Stitch (cam): hdc in 3rd lp of the next st.
Round 1 With C and 6.5mm hook, join with a sl st in any corner ch-2 sp of the blanket, ch 1, hdc in the same sp as join, *hdc across to next corner ch-2 sp, placing 1 hdc in each sc and hdc2tog over the ch-2 sps of neighboring squares, (hdc, ch 2, hdc) in corner ch-2 sp; rep from * around, join with a sl st in the first hdc of round and cc to B. Fasten off C.
Round 2 With B, cam in same st as join, *cam across row to corner ch-2 sp, (hdc, ch 1, hdc) in corner ch-2 sp; rep from * around, join with a sl st in first hdc of round and cc to D. Fasten off B.
Round 3 With D, repeat Round 2 and cc to A at end of round. Fasten off D.
Round 4 With A, sl st loosely in the 3rd lp of each hdc and (sl st, ch 2, sl st) in each ch-2 sp around. Fasten off at end of round and finish with an invisible join.
Finishing
- Weave in all remaining ends.
- Steam block to final dimensions, paying close attention to seams and border.

Hi there..I can’t make the open shells stitch work, even with the errata correction. Do you have it diagrammed? Thank you!
Hi there! I don’t have a diagram for this stitch, but there is a tutorial video. Did that help at all?
Hi! I’ve gotten 3 patterns done and they’re not measuring the right size. The mosaic measures about 12 inches horizontal and 10 inches vertically. I followed your pattern very closely and worked through to row 42. Are they supposed to measure 11 1/2 inches vertically, horizontally, or diagonally? Thank you so much in advance!!
Hi darling. Sorry you’re having some trouble. Let’s get you back on track. At the end of stitching, your squares should be 11.5 x 11.5″. If they are not, you can follow the directions to adjust the size. Everyone’s gauge is a bit different, so you might have to adjust some things with your squares. There’s info in each pattern on how to make such adjustments.
Thank you for responding and help. I will try that.
