Get Acquainted with Corner to Corner Crochet

Corner to Corner Crochet, also known as C2C, is a great technique to try after you learn the basics of crochet. It’s built on a base of chains and mainly uses double crochet and slip stitches to create the fabric. Sounds easy enough, but what about the color changes? You might be surprised to know that they’re easier than you think!

  • 6mm crochet hook
  • 6.5mm crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle

FINISHED SIZE

12″ square after border and blocking

PATTERN NOTES

  • Feeling creative? Customize your square by creating a chart of 13 rows and 13 columns then fill it with your own design!
  • The pattern uses the diagonal box stitch (c2c) in double crochet. Each pixel in the chart corresponds to one tile in the square.

INSTRUCTIONS

Starting in the bottom-right corner, work the diagonal box stitch with the 6mm hook in double crochet, turning your work at the end of each row. White pixels are worked in Color C, and red pixels are worked in Color A. Fasten off colors as needed.

Work the diagonal box stitch with these notes in mind:

  • ROW 1: Ch 6, dc in the 4th ch from the hook and each remaining chain, turn.
  • STARTING INCREASE ROWS: Ch 6, dc in 4th ch from the hook and each remaining chain. Sl st in the ch-3 of the next box, ch 3, 3dc in same ch-3 sp as join.
  • CHANGING COLOR: Complete the current box to the last dc, work the dc until 2 lps remain on hook, yo with new color, and sl st into the ch-3 of the next box.
  • TO DECREASE: Turn at the end of the row – do not chain – sl st in each of the next 3 dc and the following ch-3 sp, ch 3, continue in diagonal box stitch to the end of the row. After the last box, sl st in the ch-3 of the next box, turn your work and repeat.
  • TO END: After the final box, sl st in the ch-3 of the next box.

Complete the full chart. After chart is complete, do not fasten off. Proceed to the border.

STANDARD BORDER

  • Change to 6.5mm crochet hook and ensure the square faces right side up.
  • Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), single crochet 35 stitches evenly across the first edge of the square, placing increases and decreases where needed. At corner, ch 2 and rotate to work along the next edge.
  • Single crochet 35 stitches evenly across the edge, placing increases and decreases where needed. At corner, ch 2 and rotate to work along the next edge.
  • Repeat the last step for the remaining 2 sides. At the end of the round, join with a slip stitch in the first single crochet of the round. Fasten off and block your finished square to 12″ x 12″.
