MATERIALS
- Worsted weight yarn – color A
- 6mm crochet hook
- 6.5mm crochet hook
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle
FINISHED SIZE
12″ square after border and blocking
STITCH MULTIPLE: The Open Shells Stitch can be worked over a fsc multiple of 6 + 1, or a chain multiple of 6 + 2.
SPECIAL STITCHES
- Shell Stitch (shell): (3dc, ch 1, 3dc) in same sp
- V-Stitch (v-st): (Dc, ch 1, dc) in same st or sp

INSTRUCTIONS
With A and 6mm hook, fsc 37. Alternately, ch 38, sc in 2nd ch from hook and each rem ch, turn.
ROW 1 (WS) Ch 1, v-st in st at base of ch, (ch 2, sk 5, v-st in next st) across row, turn.
ROW 2 (RS) Ch 1, dc in st at base of ch, 3dc in next ch-1 sp, (shell in ch-sp of next v-st) across row to last ch-2 sp, sk ch-2 sp, 3dc in next ch-1 sp, dc in last dc, turn. (5 shells)
ROW 3 Ch 1, v-st in st at base of ch, ch 2, (v-st in ch-sp of next shell, ch 2) to last 4 dc, sk 3 dc, v-st in last st, turn.
Repeat Rows 2-3 until square measures 11.5″ when lightly stretched. Finish with a Row 2 repeat. This took me 16 rows, NOT including the fsc row.
LAST ROW (WS) Ch 1, sc in the st at base of ch, sc in next st, (ch 5, sc in ch-sp of next shell) 5 times, sc in 2nd to last dc of row, sc in following dc, turn. Proceed to Standard Border.
STANDARD BORDER
- Change to 6.5mm crochet hook and ensure the square faces right side up.
- Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), single crochet 35 stitches evenly across the first edge of the square, placing increases and decreases where needed. At corner, ch 2 and rotate to work along the next edge.
- Single crochet 35 stitches evenly across the edge, placing increases and decreases where needed. At corner, ch 2 and rotate to work along the next edge.
- Repeat the last step for the remaining 2 sides. At the end of the round, join with a slip stitch in the first single crochet of the round. Fasten off and block your finished square to 12″ x 12″.
