Kiki Shawl – A Free Tunisian Crochet Shawl Pattern

Blog Post Cover Image (22)

Fall into the rhythm of the Kiki Shawl, a bulky weight Tunisian crochet shawl pattern designed in collaboration with Little Wing Fibers.

Tunisian crochet has been an obsession of mine for the better part of a decade. Since I first learned the basic stitches, I fell in love with the rhythm and beauty of the technique. The Kiki Shawl marries simplicity with speed by using beginner-friendly stitching, bulky weight yarn, and luxurious fibers in a shawl pattern that you can finish in less than 50 rows.

Beginner Tunisian Crochet Shawl Pattern

I always hear it: “I want to try Tunisian crochet, but I don’t know where to start”. I get it – it’s hard to find time to learn something new between all of your other WIPs (works in progress), daily life, and the need to get just a bit of rest. But you’d be surprised at how little time it takes to learn the basics of Tunisian crochet. Today could be your day to learn!

Tunisian crochet sits at the magical crossroads of knitting and traditional crochet. You use a long crochet hook to gather loops and create truly unique textures. It has a calming rhythm that I can only compare to watching the water slowly lap the shore. It’s truly mesmerizing. The Kiki Shawl pattern simplifies the basic techniques of Tunisian crochet while introducing you to interesting and beautiful stitches.

TLYC and Little Wing Fibers

I had the true pleasure of working with Marly of Little Wing Fibers to design the Kiki Shawl. I met Marly at Our Maker Life, an annual fiber enthusiast meet-up that was hosted in Portland this year. In our brief time together, I learned that Marly is a long-time fiber lover who picked up dyeing as a hobby during the pandemic. She introduced her first skeins in October 2022 and only continues to improve through her extensive practice.

Marly and I at Our Maker Life – Portland in July 2022

The Kiki Shawl uses Marly’s Cloud Bulky base, which is a category 5 bulky weight yarn in 100% superwash merino wool. When I say this yarn is squishy, I really mean it. Both in the skein and in the finished shawl, the 2-ply yarn maintains its bounce. You’ll need two skeins of two colors to make this shawl. I used the colorways “May All Your Bacon Burn” (pinkish-red) and “Onigiri” (cream) for mine, but any combination from Marly’s Creature Comforts collection will do.

Explore the limited “Creature Comforts” collection HERE. But don’t wait – it is only available for a limited time!

The Creature Comforts collection is only available for a limited time. If you miss the launch or want to try a different yarn, swap in any bulky weight yarn for this Tunisian crochet shawl pattern. Play around with different fibers or yarn weights, as well. This shawl plays nicely with modifications, so extend any of the sections to your heart’s delight, and be sure to adjust your hook size if you use yarn lighter than the original.

NOTES + TUTORIALS

  • For this shawl, you need to know the basics of Tunisian crochet (TC), how to crochet the Tunisian simple stitch, reverse stitch, and honeycomb stitch, as well as color changes. Use these video links to master the skills: Tunisian crochet for beginners + simple stitch; Tunisian reverse stitch; honeycomb stitch; TC color changes.
  • Carry the yarns not in use up the side of the work; do not cut any colors until the directions call for it.
  • This pattern is made to use every inch of the 4 skeins mentioned. Feel free to make your sections longer or shorter to accommodate the yarn you use.
  • To end the shawl, you will slip stitch bind off “in pattern”. This means to continue the established pattern, but, instead of keeping all loops on the hook, complete the slip stitch for each stitch across the row.

Finishing

STEP 1: Seam the top gap as follows – Use the tail left from the slipknot to sew the first 4 foundation stitches to the last four foundation stitches.

STEP 2: Weave in all ends.

STEP 3: Block to finished dimensions. I recommend submerging the shawl in warm water with a no-rinse wool wash for 20-60 minutes. Press out excess water and pin shawl face down to shape on blocking boards. Allow to fully dry before unpinning. Learn more about wet blocking crochet shawls here.

Hey Toni! I have been trying to work up this shawl but I keep hitting a snag on row 6. I follow the pattern but I get to the last couple stitches before the return pass and i still have a yo and tss before the end of the work. Am I missing something here?

    • Toni L.Toni L. says

Hi Tamara. Row 5 is essentially the same as Row 2, but with TRS instead of TSS between the yarn overs. At the end of the row, you’re meant to TRS until you reach the last yarn over. At that point, you will have a yarn over, plus one stitch, plus your edge stitch (3 sts at the end of the row). TSS the yarn over, then yarn over, TSS the next stitch, then work you edge stitch. Does that help?

Fyi – looks like something glitchy is happening with the blog post, and the materials aren’t being shown. Someone with the pdf has confirmed that the recommended hook size is 8mm with a 32″ cord
