Clawfoot Stitch Square Pattern

MATERIALS
- Worsted weight yarn – colors B and C
- 6mm crochet hook
- 6.5mm crochet hook
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle
FINISHED SIZE
12″ square after border and blocking
STITCH MULTIPLE: The Clawfoot Stitch can be worked over a fsc of any odd number, or a chain of any even number.
SPECIAL STITCHES
- Half Double Crochet Three Together (hdc3tog): yarn over, pull up a loop in the last st of the previous cluster, (yarn over, pull up a loop in the next stitch) 2 times, yarn over, pull through 6 loops on hook, yarn over, pull through remaining 2 loops.
PATTERN NOTE: The starting ch-4 counts as the first double crochet plus chain 1.

INSTRUCTIONS
With C and 6mm hook, fsc 33. Alternately, ch 34, sc in 2nd ch from hook and each rem ch, turn.
ROW 1 (WS) Ch 4, sk sc at base of ch, (yo, pull up a lp in the next st) 3 times, yo, pull through 6 lps, yo, pull through rem 2 lps, ch 1, (hdc3tog, ch 1) across to last st, dc in last st, turn. (15 clusters + 2 dc)
ROW 2 (RS) Ch 1, sc in first st, sc in each ch-1 sp and st across to tch, sc in tch sp, sc in 3rd ch of tch, cc to B.
Repeat Rows 1-2 until square measures 11.5″, alternating C and B every 2 rows. End with a Row 1 repeat. Fasten off color no longer in use and proceed to Standard Border.
STANDARD BORDER
- Change to 6.5mm crochet hook and ensure the square faces right side up.
- Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), single crochet 35 stitches evenly across the first edge of the square, placing increases and decreases where needed. At corner, ch 2 and rotate to work along the next edge.
- Single crochet 35 stitches evenly across the edge, placing increases and decreases where needed. At corner, ch 2 and rotate to work along the next edge.
- Repeat the last step for the remaining 2 sides. At the end of the round, join with a slip stitch in the first single crochet of the round. Fasten off and block your finished square to 12″ x 12″.
