MATERIALS
- Worsted weight yarn – colors A and B
- 6mm crochet hook
- 6.5mm crochet hook
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle
FINISHED SIZE
12″ square after border and blocking
STITCH MULTIPLE: The Houndstooth Square is worked over a chain in any odd number.
PATTERN NOTES
- Change color at the end of every row. Fasten off the old color at color change.

INSTRUCTIONS
With A and 6mm hook, ch 33.
ROW 1 (RS) Sc in the 2nd ch from hook, dc 1, (sc 1, dc 1) across row, cc to B and fasten off A, turn.
ROW 2 (WS) Ch 1, (sc 1, dc 1) across row, cc to A, fasten off B, turn.
Rep Row 2 until square measures 11.5″, alternating colors A and B every row. This took me 28 rows.
Fasten off color the no longer in use and proceed to Standard Border.
STANDARD BORDER
- Change to 6.5mm crochet hook and ensure the square faces right side up.
- Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), single crochet 35 stitches evenly across the first edge of the square, placing increases and decreases where needed. At corner, ch 2 and rotate to work along the next edge.
- Single crochet 35 stitches evenly across the edge, placing increases and decreases where needed. At corner, ch 2 and rotate to work along the next edge.
- Repeat the last step for the remaining 2 sides. At the end of the round, join with a slip stitch in the first single crochet of the round. Fasten off and block your finished square to 12″ x 12″.
