Graphgans, or afghans made from pixel charts, are a fun way to add some character to your crochet projects. But, did you know you could do the same with Tunisian crochet? The intarsia method involves using separate balls of yarn for each color change to create crisp images without having to deal with pesky floats on the back of your work.

The Intarsia Color Change method is used in the Tunisian Snowy Sampler blanket to make the SNOW Square. Be sure to practice your tension and make adjustments as needed so your image does not come out distorted.

SNOW Square Pattern

MATERIALS

  • Worsted weight yarn – colors C and B
  • 6.5mm crochet hook
  • 6.5mm corded Tunisian crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle

FINISHED SIZE

12″ square after border and blocking

STITCH MULTIPLE: There is no stitch multiple for this pattern. BUT! If you’re feeling creative, customize your square by creating a chart with 33 rows by 40 columns, then fill it with your own message!

SPECIAL STITCHES

  • Last Tunisian Stitch (Lts): insert hook under BOTH vertical bars of the last stitch, yo, pull up a lp.
  • Return Pass (RetP): Ch 1, (yo, pull through 2 lps) until 1 lp remains on hook.

PATTERN NOTE: Use a different bobbin or skein for each color change.

INSTRUCTIONS

ROW 1 With B, ch 40, pull up a lp in the back bump of the 2nd ch from the hook and each rem ch, RetP.

ROWS 2-33 Work the chart below completely in Tss using the intarsia colorwork method, changing colors as shown. Rows begin on the right edge and are worked from the bottom up. White squares represent Color C, and black squares represent Color B. The last stitch is always worked as for Lts. When square is complete, proceed to Bind Off.

BIND OFF Loosely sl st each st across until last st, sl st last st as for Lts. Do not cut yarn. Proceed to Standard Border.

STANDARD BORDER

  • Change to 6.5mm traditional crochet hook and ensure the square faces right side up.
  • Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), single crochet 35 stitches evenly across the first edge of the square, placing increases and decreases where needed. At corner, ch 2 and rotate to work along the next edge.
  • Single crochet 35 stitches evenly across the edge, placing increases and decreases where needed. At corner, ch 2 and rotate to work along the next edge.
  • Repeat the last step for the remaining 2 sides. At the end of the round, join with a slip stitch in the first single crochet of the round. Fasten off and block your finished square to 12″ x 12″.
