Don’t Get Boxed In by the Basketweave Stitch

As a dedicated crochet enthusiast, nothing excites me more than discovering new stitches to fall in love with. I first came across a different version of the Tunisian Basketweave Stitch that uses Tunisian knit and purl stitches. It was pretty enough, but I knew it could be improved. So, I swapped the Tunisian purl stitch for the reverse stitch, and VOILA! The reverse stitch creates a tighter bump, uses less yarn, and is much easier to do.

So, what would you use the Basketweave stitch for? Personally, I believe it would look fabulous in chunky yarn for a cozy throw blanket or in lace yarn for textured kitchen curtains. Whatever project you plan for this stitch, ensure you take your time and practice even tension so all of that lovely basketweave texture can be revealed.

MATERIALS

Worsted weight yarn – color C
6.5mm crochet hook
6.5mm corded Tunisian crochet hook
Scissors
Tapestry needle

FINISHED SIZE

12″ square after border and blocking

STITCH MULTIPLE: The Basketweave Stitch is worked over a chain that is a multiple of 8 + 6. Adjust as needed.

SPECIAL STITCHES

Last Tunisian Stitch (Lts): insert hook under BOTH vertical bars of the last stitch, yo, pull up a lp.
Return Pass (RetP): Ch 1, (yo, pull through 2 lps) until 1 lp remains on hook.

INSTRUCTIONS

ROW 1 With C, ch 38, pull up a lp in the back bump of the 2nd ch from the hook and each rem ch, RetP.

ROWS 2-5 (Tks 4, trs 4) across row to last 5 sts, tks 4, Lts, RetP.

ROWS 6-9 (Trs 4, tks 4) across to last 5 sts, trs 4, Lts, RetP.

Rep Rows 2-9 until square measures 11.5″, ending with a Row 5 or Row 9 repeat. This took me 37 rows.

BIND OFF Loosely sl st each tks as for tks, and each trs as for trs; sl st the last st as for Lts. DO NOT FASTEN OFF. Proceed to Standard Border.

STANDARD BORDER

Change to 6.5mm traditional crochet hook and ensure the square faces right side up.
Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), single crochet 35 stitches evenly across the first edge of the square, placing increases and decreases where needed. At corner, ch 2 and rotate to work along the next edge.

Repeat the last step for the remaining 2 sides. At the end of the round, join with a slip stitch in the first single crochet of the round. Fasten off and block your finished square to 12″ x 12″.
