Get Colorful with the Entrelac Crochet Technique
Entrelac is most well-known as a knitting technique. While I’m still practicing using two needles, I prefer one hook. Thank goodness there’s a way to make Entrelac with Tunisian crochet! You can make patchwork fabric that looks woven by picking up stitches along the side and top of other blocks. Each new block nestles with its neighbor, allowing you to create colorful crochet scarves, shawls, blankets, and even hats without weaving in a million ends. Now, that’s what I call a win-win!

The Entrelac Crochet method was used to make one of my favorite designs, Entrelac and Key. With just a traditional crochet hook and 6 skeins of hand-dyed DK weight yarn, I was able to stitch a masterpiece that I admire almost daily.

ROW 4 Beginning, 2 Middle, and Ending Square with D.
ROW 5 Beginning, 3 Middle, and Ending Square with A.

ROW 7 Decrease and 2 Middle Squares with C.
ROW 8 Decrease and Middle Square with D.
ROW 9 Decrease Square with A.
Do not fasten off after last row. Continue to Standard Border, substituting slip stitches for single crochet stitches. Based on my gauge, the final square was closer to 12″ instead of 11.5″. Slip stitches for the Border are meant to keep the square closer to the desired final size.
STANDARD BORDER
- Continue with 6.5mm traditional crochet hook and ensure the square faces right side up.
- Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), single crochet 35 stitches evenly across the first edge of the square, placing increases and decreases where needed. At corner, ch 2 and rotate to work along the next edge.
- Single crochet 35 stitches evenly across the edge, placing increases and decreases where needed. At corner, ch 2 and rotate to work along the next edge.
- Repeat the last step for the remaining 2 sides. At the end of the round, join with a slip stitch in the first single crochet of the round. Fasten off and block your finished square to 12″ x 12″.
