Three Ways to Rock the Skinny Scarf Trend

Skinny scarves are everywhere right now, but it’s about time crochet got its own representation in this trend! The Bernie Scarf Trio gives you three cozy options in one pattern: a cute kerchief, a classic scarf, and a drapey shawl. Each piece is designed to suit your vibe and your plans, whether you’re running errands, heading to the office, or cozying up at a weekend brunch.

The beauty of this trio is how versatile it is—dress it up with a chic coat and boots, or keep it casual with a denim jacket and sneakers. The kerchief adds a playful pop, the scarf is perfect for everyday layering, and the shawl brings drama and warmth for cooler evenings. Crochet style has officially arrived!

A Winter -Ready Wool Blend Yarn

For the Bernie Scarf Trio, Lion Brand Wool-Ease DK was my go-to because it’s that perfect middle-ground yarn—soft like wool, easy-care like acrylic. Lightweight yet warm, it’s ideal for transitional weather, and the thoughtful color selection lets you craft something both edgy and sophisticated. Bonus: it’s affordable without feeling cheap, so you can really play with shades and combos to match your personal style.

If wool isn’t your thing, you can absolutely substitute a cotton blend or anti-pilling acrylic—you’ll get the same beautiful stitch definition and comfy drape. Consider the stunning drape of Coboo, or the irresistible color palettes of Mandala, also from Lion Brand.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Not sure if you need a kerchief, a scarf, or a shawl? How about all three?! The Bernie Scarf Trio is three great patterns in one – choose the size that fits your vibe. An über soft wool/acrylic blend highlights the smooth stitching and gentle shaping of this staple accessory.

MATERIALS

  • Lion Brand Wool-Ease DK, (category #4), 80% acrylic, 20% wool [232 yards / 85 grams. Kerchief made with A – Lavender, 45 yards (1 skein); Scarf made with B – Slate, 230 yards (1 skein); Shawl made with C – Goldenrod, 340 yards (2 skeins)
  • 4.5mm crochet hook (this one is my favorite!)
  • Scissors
  • Tape measure
  • Tapestry needle
  • Locking stitch marker

FINISHED SIZES

  • Size 1 (Kerchief): 45″ long x 5″ wide

4” – 21 stitches x 15 rows (ch-1 counted as stitch when determining gauge)

ABBREVIATIONS

Ch = chain

Rep = repeat

Sc = single crochet

Sc2tog = single crochet 2 together (decrease made)

Sc3tog = single crochet 3 together (decrease made)

Sk = skip

Sl St = slip stitch

Sp = space

St(s) = stitch(es)

PATTERN NOTES

  • Pattern Stitch: This stitch pattern involves working single crochet and chain stitches. You will always place a single crochet in the next single crochet. All chain spaces are skipped.
  • Tracking Increases and Decreases: I found it useful to attach locking stitch markers to my increases and decreases throughout their respective sections. This way, I can keep track of my shaping without having to count rows. This step is optional, but especially useful with the size of the Shawl design.
  • Adjusting the Size:
    • To make your scarf longer/shorter: Add/Remove rows in the Increase Section.
    • To make your scarf wider/narrower: Shorten/Lengthen the number of rows between increases in the Increase section.
  • Scarf Border: There are two border types used in this pattern – a single crochet border used in the Kerchief and the Shawl, and a slip stitch border used in the Scarf.  The goal of the Scarf is to use one full skein of DK weight yarn while maximizing the length. Feel free to add yarn or adjust the dimensions of the scarf to leave enough yarn for a single crochet border (approximately 12 grams).

    I have started making the kerchief. Pattern is easy to follow and it looks fantastic. However, I am wondering if the reported yardage (45 yards) required for the DK yarn is correct? While I am using a different yarn, it is a similar gauge (245 yards/100g) and 49 yards has only made about half the kerchief! At this point, I would estimate that I will need about 120 yards to complete the kerchief.

    I’m making the kerchief size using Lion Brand Coboo, and I absolutely LOVE how it’s coming out! My one concern is that the increase and decrease bumps are still visible after making the border. I am planning to machine wash and dry it, in the hope that the stitches will relax. The other option would be to block it…..but I’ve never done that before! I’m not sure which option is better; what would you recommend?

      Hey there! I can totally understand the concern. Either method of relaxing the stitches should work. I’d start with blocking it, which makes it easier to smooth out those stitches by hand. Best of luck!!
