How to Make a Crochet Tote Bag
When the leaves start turning and that crisp fall air hits, I know it’s officially my favorite season. I never really know where the day will take me—maybe a farmer’s market run for apples and carrots, a hayride with my giggling nieces and nephews, or a happy hour margarita sesh with my girls. Wherever life pulls me, I need a crochet tote bag that can keep up with all the action. Enter the Gloria Tote Bag—roomy, ready for anything, and effortlessly cute while doing it.
For this project, I had to stretch a little outside my comfort zone. I was on the hunt for a stitch pattern that’s fun, simple, but still interesting—and I hit the jackpot with the interlocking block stitch. This beauty uses a series of 3-double crochet groups nested together for a bold, graphic print that shines in any color palette, from subtle neutrals to full-on statement shades.

Is Recycled Polyester a Good Choice for a Crochet Tote Bag?
The Gloria Tote proves that recycled yarn can be both fun and functional. I used Lion Brand Re-Make, a 100% recycled polyester with a soft, teddy bear–like texture, and it’s such a joy to work with. The plush, stretchy fabric makes the bag perfect for everyday essentials like your wallet, keys, or a cozy scarf—it molds to whatever you carry and feels super cuddly in your hands.
Because the yarn is stretchy, the tote works best for lighter items. For heavier loads, adding a lining gives extra structure and durability. Eco-friendly, playful, and ready for all your fall adventures, the Gloria Tote Bag delivers on form and function,

Sl St = slip stitch

PATTERN NOTES
- Starting chain: The starting chain 2 DOES NOT count as a stitch.
- Managing tension: It is imperative to keep your tension loose when making the double crochet and chain stitches when working in the pattern stitch of this project. This ensures your stitches are the correct height and your chains are stretchy.
- Carrying yarns: Carry all yarns up the inside of the bag while making. DO NOT CUT any yarns until instructed.

Hi I’m part of this tutorial but don’t seem to be able to download the free pattern. Can you please advise. Thank you.
Hello – all TLYC patterns are free to view on my blog, not download. If you’d like a PDF copy, you can purchase it from my shop using the links in this post.
hello. in the pattern above you say to Ch 40 and then after then after Row 1, it states you should have 39 stitches but in the YouTube tutorial, you say we should chain 41 and then we should have 4o stitches. Can you confirm which one is correct? thank you so much.
Hi! Thanks for pointing out this discrepancy. You should have 39 stitches after completing Row 1 of the Base.
Round 3 of the body says “cc to C”. Is it supposed to say ” cc to A”?
Thanks so much for pointing that out – I just updated it 🙂
