HexaGranny CAL - make a hexagon granny cardigan during this crochet along for a chance to win amazing prizes. Perfect for beginners!

What is the HexaGranny Crochet Along?

After crocheting my very first sweater to wear to Rhinebeck in 2021, I was bit by the crochet garment bug. There’s no greater satisfaction than a perfect-fitting garment after hours of crocheting. But many makers are still nervous about crocheting wearables. The HexaGranny Crochet Along (aka CAL) will alleviate your stress by guiding you through how to make a hexagon granny cardigan step-by-step.

The HexaGranny CAL is a 4-week event hosted inside my Yarn Hive Community. It’s designed to demystify crochet garment making with a choose-your-own-adventure format. Beginning June 24th, we’ll break down each step of our cardigan with a helpful tutorial video accompanying a written pattern. Crocheters are encouraged to personalize their project by working with the DK, worsted, or bulky weight yarn of their choice. You can also look forward to live-stream events and giveaways!

Here’s a breakdown of the important dates:

  • Sourcing Materials, now through June 24th. Gather the yarn, hooks, and notions needed to make your sweater. I’ve recommended several yarn options from our CAL sponsor, Berroco, for your project. Keep scrolling for details on using the recommended yarns and a complete supply list for each yarn weight.
  • Weeks 1-4, June 24th-July 21st. Crochet along with us inside the Yarn Hive Community. Start with your personalized schematic, create the base hexagons, shape the body and sleeves to your liking, add the final ribbing, and complete the finishing steps. Drop into the weekly live streams on Mondays at 6pm ET to update us on your progress.
  • Final Live Stream, July 22nd. Tune into live streams on Instagram and inside the Yarn Hive Community to share your experience. The Instagram live stream will be at 5pm ET, and the Yarn Hive live stream will be at 6pm ET.

What is the HexaGranny Cardigan?

Crochet hexagon granny cardigans have been sweeping the maker space for a few years now. Not only are they super cute, but they’re wildly easy to make, even for beginners. I dipped my toe into the hexagon granny craze with a colorful version, made in Lang Cloud. The category 5 bulky weight yarn positively shines in this pattern and the response online has been overwhelmingly positive.

Requests for the pattern came in hot and heavy. I’ve crafted the cardigan pattern in preparation for the HexaGranny CAL, and it will be available alongside a detailed tutorial video on June 24th inside the Yarn Hive Community. The pattern breaks down the process to create a made-to-measure cardigan using your favorite DK, worsted, or bulky weight yarn. Since this cardigan is wholly customized, the pattern details how to adjust different parts to fit your body and style.

This pattern and tutorial are exclusively available inside the Yarn Hive Community beginning June 24th and through the crochet along. Once the CAL wraps up, you’ll find the standalone pattern available in my pattern shops (TLYarnCrafts.com and Ravelry) and the tutorial video on my YouTube channel.

Meet Our Yarn Sponsor, Berroco

If you’re looking for the perfect yarn to make your HexaGranny Cardigan, look no further than our CAL yarn sponsor, Berroco. Berroco has been a local yarn store staple for nearly 40 years. With 6 partner brands under their umbrella, they have yarns to meet the needs of every crocheter. After making my first hexagon cardigan with their partner brand Lang, I knew I wanted to tap into Berroco’s expertise to bring our crochet along to life.

Berroco is also sponsoring 4 giveaways during the HexaGranny CAL. Each week, one lucky participant will win the yarn and pattern for one of Berroco’s expertly designed patterns. Weeks 1-3 will have assigned patterns, and the Week 4 winner will get to choose the pattern they’d like a kit for.

You must actively participate in the HexaGranny CAL to be eligible for giveaways. Giveaways are open worldwide – stateside winners will receive the yarn and pattern directly; international winners will receive a gift card in the value of the kit. The giveaway winner will be randomly chosen from all Honeybees who post in the crochet along channel during the CAL.

Join the CAL to win these kits from Berroco: Ariana, Kellar, and Last Dance

Take the guesswork out of making the perfect cardigan by using one of the recommended yarns. These yarns have unique characteristics to meet your fiber and yarn weight preferences.

Yarn Quantities: All yarn quantities are a best guess based on the dimensions and quality of the original yarn. Quantities are overestimated to account for your individual gauge and reasonable adjustments to dimensions in the pattern. If you are concerned about running out of yarn, purchase at least one skein in addition to the recommendation below. Quantity recommendations for each yarn are categorized as follows: XS/S (M/L, XL/2XL)(3XL/4XL, 5XL). Keep scrolling to see the full sizing chart.

Bozzolo: 100% cotton, 240 yards/ 100 grams, worsted weight. Feathery soft and offered in a beautiful range of multis and solids, Bozzolo is a 100% cotton yarn from Italy. Smooth with a hint of shine, Bozzolo has the delightful feel you expect from cotton, while its construction gives it an airy lightness. Quantities: 6 (8, 11)(12, 13) skeins.

Wizard: 85/15 merino nylon, 262 yards/ 100 grams, bulky weight. Berroco Wizard is a self-striping blend of superwash Merino wool and a touch of nylon that works up quickly on large hooks. Create vibrant sweaters, cowls, and blankets with this bulky weight yarn and have warm, machine-washable finished items in no time. Grab your hook and watch the colors unfold like magic as you work with Wizard! Quantities: 7 (9, 10)(12, 14) skeins.

Sesame: 43/39/9/9 wool acrylic cotton nylon, 230 yards/ 100 grams, worsted weight. Berroco Sesame is a colorful self-striping yarn with a subtle sheen. The fibers take the dye differently, producing a marbled effect. Worsted weight Sesame is machine-washable, making it a great choice for sweaters and projects that will be washed often. Quantities: 6 (8, 11)(12, 13) skeins.

Hearthside: 40/33/27 alpaca cotton wool, 159 yards/ 100 grams, bulky weight. Natural fibers and a chainette construction combine to make Hearthside a lightweight yet cozy yarn that you won’t want to wait to wrap up in! Make timelessly chic garments, accessories, and more with the understated natural shades of this alpaca, wool, and cotton blend yarn. Quantities: 7 (9, 10)(12, 14) skeins.

Remix: 30/27/24/10/9 nylon cotton acrylic silk linen, 216 yards/ 100 grams, aran (heavy worsted) weight. Berroco Remix is a wonderfully soft, non-wool tweed made from 5 recycled fibers! Remix has deep colors with a weathered effect that looks great in finished projects. Not only is Remix a great tweed option for those who can’t or prefer not to use wool, but this beauty is also machine-washable!. Quantities: 6 (8, 11)(12, 13) skeins.

Purchase the recommended yarn using one of these easy methods:

  1. Purchase In Store: Find these yarns at your local yarn store using Berroco’s Store Locator. Drop into the store to squish these yarns in person and pick your colors before bringing them home.
  2. Berroco 123 Dropship: Support your local yarn store and get your favorite yarns in one fell swoop! Berroco’s 123 Dropship allows you to purchase your preferred yarns from your local yarn store and have them shipped straight to your home from Berroco’s massive warehouse! You can buy yarns from any of their partner brands even if the LYS doesn’t carry those brands in-store. Start by finding an LYS near you using Berroco’s Store Locator, then contact the store and request a Berroco 123 Dropship order.
  3. Purchase Online: Berroco and partner brand yarns are available from many online sellers. A few that I recommend are WEBS, LoveCrafts, and Michigan Fine Yarns.

Choose Your Own Yarn

One of the perks of a hexagon cardigan is that it works well with just about any yarn, including your stash! Makers are invited to choose their own yarn for the HexaGranny CAL. Shop your stash and find some treasures, or purchase the DK, worsted, or bulky weight yarns that spark your fancy. You really can’t go wrong! Use the chart below to pick your size and the approximate yardage needed for your dream cardigan.

Additional Supplies

In addition to the yarn, you will need the following supplies to complete your HexaGranny Cardigan:

  • Crochet Hook. The final hook size you use for your cardigan depends on your personal gauge and preference. I recommend using a hook at least 0.5mm or larger than you typically use for your desired yarn weight. Start with a 5.5mm for DK, a 6.5mm for worsted, and an 8mm for bulky weight. Size your hook up or down based on the results of your blocked swatch. To swatch, follow this tutorial for the granny stripe stitch pattern. I recommend these hooks for beginners and these hooks for a splurge.
  • Scissor. Scissors will be used to fasten off yarn and clip your ends after weaving them in.
  • Tapestry Needle. I prefer a metal tapestry needle for weaving in my ends, but you can also check out these unique ones from Susan Bates.
  • Tape Measure. Since your cardigan will be made to measure, you must measure yourself and your cardigan pieces as you go. Use a soft tape measure that can easily fit around your bust and upper arms.
  • Locking Stitch Markers. These little tools are handy during seaming or when you need to store your unfinished motifs. Use them to hold the live loop so you don’t lose any of your precious progress between sittings.
  • Existing Sweater or Cardigan (optional). Many first-time cardigan makers may find it helpful to use a sweater or cardigan from their closet as a model for their handmade cardigan. Find a sweater in your closet whose fit you love and use it to help fill in the measurements on your Personalized Schematic.

Hexagon cardigans are like your favorite potato chips – once you pop, you just can’t stop! I’ve made two so far. My first was made from Lang Cloud, a bulky weight wonder that feels like an absolute dream. The second was made with mini skeins held double, which resulted in a DK weight gauge. With thoughtful modifications, I have two very different cardigans that I can’t get enough of!

I’m excited to make my third hexagon cardigan using Berroco Sesame in the color Ube. I don’t typically gravitate toward such cool colors, but I couldn’t resist the depth and tone of this beautiful colorway.

I hope you will join us for what is sure to be a sensational experience. I can’t wait to start stitching with you during the HexaGranny Crochet Along! Have questions? Be sure to ask them below, or inside the Yarn Hive Community.

I’m hoping to join along but will be having hernia repair surgery on the 26th. I’m not sure how I’ll feel. Either way I’ll be cheering my fellow honeybees along! 😉❤️👍🏼

I chose Berroco Bozzolo for my cardigan. I have tried a 6.5 and 5.5 hook to make the swatch and both are too loose, IMO. Is there any additional info about what the gauge should be for the project? I will try few smaller hooks. Should I be aiming for the gauge in the swatch video?

Hi! There’s no specific details on what the gauge should be. It’s all about feel and drape. If you think the two hooks you used are too big, keep trying until you make a fabric you like. And be sure to block your swatches, as that changes the feel of them, too.

Also, I can’t make the live event on 6/24 – will this be recorded?
