Rancher Shawl Pattern

When inspiration strikes out of nowhere, you’ve got to run with it! I found myself with a break in my design schedule and no current WIPs. (Well, not exactly NO WIPs, just none I wanted to work on…) I immediately dove into my stash and pulled out the prettiest mini skeins I could find – this beautiful 12-skein gradient from Montana Crochet.

Ashley of Montana Crochet is a wizard with color. I’ve had the pleasure of using her yarn for my coveted French Press Cardi and I even included some colorful skeins in my Entrelac and Key Shawl. But this would be the first time I’ve used her mini skeins for a project, and I was bursting with excitement.

The Rancher Shawl feels like a design that always knew it was meant to be. From the very first stitches, the pattern started to come together. I went for a shallow crochet boomerang shape for a shawl that’s suitable for any time of year. I incorporated a unique fade technique that makes use of the return pass to transition between colors.

As much as I loved working through this two-color fade, my favorite part of the Rancher Shawl has to be the tiny tassel border. I stumbled across a YouTube video on how to make tiny tassels with a dinner fork. I tried one myself and ran to my husband, yelling “Look! It’s so cute!”. He smiled sweetly and nodded – lol.

But I knew I was onto something. I used the remainder of the 12th mini skein to make as many tassels as I could – 32, to be exact. I spaced them out evenly on the bottom edges of my blocked crochet boomerang shawl and attached them. The Rancher Shawl was officially complete.

What’s the Deal with Mini Skeins?

The idea of using mini skeins is still elusive to so many crocheters. How do you find these tiny hanks of yarn? And what do you do with them? I’ve answered both questions in this YouTube video! Check out these mini skein sellers and watch the video for more yarny inspiration.
