Back Post Double Crochet 2 Together (bpdc2tog): yarn over, insert hook from back-to-front-to-back around the first post stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over, insert hook from back-to-front-to-back around the next post stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over, pull through all loops on hook.

It’s confession time: I am a certified yarn snob. I’ve known it for a long time and it’s refreshing to finally admit it 🙂
But seriously, I have a weakness for hand-dyed yarn, soft merino wool, and pretty yarn labels. When I got the chance to partner with Traveling Yarn via LoveCrafts.com, I pounced on it. Within a few days, two skeins of Traveling Yarn Worsted were in my hands and I was in hog heaven.
Run by Sarah Wharton, Traveling Yarn is a collection of artisan hand-dyed yarn inspired by desert landscapes. The colors I landed on for the Barclay Beanie design were Merlot (left) and Hardcore Peach (right). Each skein has unique characteristics. Both have a tonal nature, which I love, but Merlot is a bit more muted and mature while Hardcore Peach is playful and spunky.
After starting this design over about 10 times (ahhh, the joys of pattern design!), I found some inspiration in classic knit accessories. I love the idea of all-over ribbing, but you don’t see it much in crochet. I practiced with some post stitches and the design started to take shape.
Worked from the bottom up, I was able to customize the design and add some gradual shaping at the top. A faux fur pom pom and a leatherette tag later, and the look was complete. The finished Barclay Beanie is fitted with very little slouch and has a massive amount of stretch. While designed for adults, this beanie could easily fit teens and young adults.

Toni, I am starting my Barclay Beanie and I it just does not look right to me. On round 2 of the body instructions, should I do fpdc 4 and then do bpdc4 in the next stitch; or fpdc4 then turn and do bpdc4 in those same stitches from the back? Am I making it harder than it should be? HELP!
Hi Denise – the body of the Barclay Beanie (Rounds 1-14) is completed in turned rounds. So you start with a dc in the join, then do 4 fpdc stitches, followed by 4 bpdc stitches. Keep repeating that until you get around to where you started, then slip stitch in the beginning dc, and TURN your work. You’ll then do the same instructions, as your fpdc stitches are now bpdc stitches and vice versa. I hope that helps. Feel free to email me if you have more questions.
