The Easton Shawl, a crochet fade triangle scarf

Easton

Get lost in the wonderful world of color when you try the Easton Shawl!

There’s nothing like curling up with a simple crochet pattern that lets the yarn really shine. In designing the Easton Shawl, I wanted to make a pattern that was easy, but not boring, and let me make the most of gorgeous yarn gifted to me by Koigu. The Easton Shawl emerged and became one of my new favorite projects.

TLYC x KOIGU

I’m grateful to partner with Koigu, a family-owned yarn producer in Canada, to make the Easton Shawl. I first met Kersti of Koigu at a maker event called Our Maker Life. We hit it off instantly, and she introduced me to the vibrant and unique yarns available from Koigu. Since then, I’ve continued to run into Kersti at other yarn-related events and conventions.

What I like most about working with Koigu yarns is how different they are from other yarns on the market. From their dye patterns to their bases and even their fibers, the folks at Koigu aren’t afraid to mix things up. The result is a heavenly crochet experience like none other. The Ugly Truth About Crochet Design

We’re friends here, right? So I’m going to be super honest about the challenges I had designing the Easton Shawl. #judgementfreezone

I worked together with the folks at Koigu to find the perfect “fade” set – specifically, I was looking for multiple colors that would blend well together. When I finally got the yarn, my jaw dropped. The Kersti yarn base is a luxurious DK weight merino wool with a tight twist called a crepe (more details on the Koigu site here). It was so important to me to do this yarn justice.

Needless to say, the first thousand crochet design ideas just didn’t work out. After I while, I had to put this WIP (work in progress) in time-out because I was overthinking it. Then it just came to me, literally, in a dream (Pro-Tip: keep a post-it and pen on your nightstand!). I woke up the next morning and got right to work. I fell so in love with the Easton Shawl pattern that I finished it in just 3 days.

Picking the Right Yarn

Koigu currently has a limited selection of their yarns available on their website here. I would suggest getting the Kersti 8 pack, which will give you exactly enough yarn to complete the Easton Shawl pattern. You can also find Koigu yarns at select local yarn shops using this directory.

If you’re looking to explore other yarns for your Easton Shawl, try finding 4 shades that are in the same color family to get a similar effect to my original sample. You’ll need about 225 yards each of the first 3 colors, and only 155 yards for the last color, which is used for the border.

Some yarns I’d recommend are:

Just about any DK weight yarn would be a great substitute for this pattern. This makes a great stash diving project, too! Take a look at those gorgeous yarns you’ve kept tucked away and see if any of those would work well for your shawl.

It Takes a Village

I am forever grateful to my pattern testers for helping me produce great patterns. For the Easton Shawl, I lucked out with some very talented and inventive makers. Take a look at their shawls below:

Your patterns are always so easy to follow! I’m just starting this, but I’m doing some yarn busting with Caron Simply Soft. I’m interested to see how this turns out in a different weight yarn.
