The Good Vibes Throw, a colorful, modern crochet throw blanket

Good Vibes

Get lost in color when you make the Good Vibes Throw, a FREE crochet pattern from TL Yarn Crafts x JOANN.

After 6 years of designing crochet patterns, I thought I had a pretty good sense of who I was and what I liked. Pattern after pattern, I’ve stuck close to my neutral-colored roots and shied away from anything that was too bold or loud. Until now. I just finished the most colorful, busy, and beautiful blanket I’ve ever made. And I love it! Stretch out of your comfort zone with me when you make the Good Vibes Throw, a FREE crochet blanket pattern made in collaboration with my friends at JOANN.

The Good Vibes Throw started with a stitch that I’ve been obsessed with but have yet to use – the crochet Block Stitch pattern. The block stitch combines the good old double crochet stitch with the single crochet stitch in a fun way. This pattern looks great all on its own, but it really shines when you mix up the colors. I just can’t get over how versatile even basic crochet stitches can be.

Then came the yarn. The main color of the blanket is a lovely new yarn from Caron called Simply Soft Speckles, now available at your local JOANN store. This new yarn joins the family of classic Simply Soft yarns, which features solids, stripes, and ombre among other versions.

Speckles is 100% acrylic, worsted weight, and is a perfect choice for just about any project. The colorway I went with was Seashell, which has a creamy white base with speckles of black and brown. The colorway gives me classic tweed vibes. I paired it with Gold and Pumpkin from the Simply Soft Solids collection for a fall feel. But I knew something was missing.

Then Neon Pink made an appearance. She was bold, loud, and unbothered with being the center of attention. Part of me knew Neon Pink was the perfect color to give the Good Vibes Throw real presence, but I was still hesitant. Then I took to Instagram, and my maker friends solidified the palette for me.

I got started right away, using the Speckles yarn for the double crochet stitches and striping in the three accent colors. The effect was mesmerizing. As the blanket continued to grow, I got more and more impatient to cuddle up with it. Thankfully, crochet blankets always get to a point where you can drape them over your legs while you’re still working on them.

The Good Vibes WIP (work in progress) made it all the way to San Diego with me. This color palette felt right at home in the California sunshine. I finished the last stitch while sitting on the front porch of our rental home, soaking in the horizon over the Point Loma waterfront. I’ll keep that memory with me every time I cover up with my new blanket. I can’t wait for you to make new memories with your Good Vibes Throw!

This blanket had such a unique vibe!I would never in a hundred years thought to pot those colors together, and I love the look. I’m a knitter, but this makes me want to crochet!

Something about these colors just works, right?! It was a bit touch and go for a while, but I’m obsessed with them now. I hope you’ll give it a try 🙂

      Claudia,
I was thinking the same thing! But now I want to go to Joann’s to find this tweed yarn to use my random skeins of colors I have. I swear, I think I’m drunk half the time I yarn shop. I have all sorts of colors in my office and have no idea why I purchased them in the first place! LOL!

Hi, Toni. Thanks for the tutorial on this block stitch technique! Gave it a thumbs-up on YT.
Did you use Caron Simply Soft yarn in the tutorial as well, or what? I liked the way the yarn looked and acted nice and cushy w/o being fuzzy.
I think if I were going to do this stitch, I would try a long-color-change ombre yarn to save weaving in all of the ends later. Do you think the color-pop outcome would be as nice, or not quite?
Thanks in advance, and I love your color and background choices for the Good Vibes Throw. ❤

Hi Jean – Thanks for watching my video and giving it a like. I really appreciate that 🙂 In the video, I believe I was using some Lion Brand Wool-Ease from my stash. I can’t be 100% sure though. And a long color changing cake yarn would be beautiful for this project. Just make sure you get a really good contrast color so the colors in the cake yarn really pop.

What a beautiful blanket!! It looks way above my skill and then I watched your video and how you broke it down makes me believe I can do it!! Thanks so much for sharing your talent!!

I’m so glad I could help, Kathy! I’d love to see your blanket as it works up. Feel free to tag me on Instagram @TLYarnCrafts or share it in my Facebook group – TLYC Makers 🙂

Oh, Ok! This is so helpful!! I had bought some Mandala Tweed cakes in White Elephant. It’s so pretty in the cake but when I started making it up, i didn’t like it. It just looked blah. I’ve frogged it three times, trying different stitches and finally I tried throwing in a line of a solid color every 10 rows, but that didn’t look right either. It was too much and upstaged the beauty of the tweed. I was about ready to give up.
But this is a great idea! A few solid colors, just peaking through but throughout the whole blanket might work out great. Thank you so much for the idea.

  5. AvatarLarissa says

If I wanted to decrease the size (baby blanket) is the base chain any even number +3?
Thank you! I love this blanket!

    • Toni L.Toni L. says

Hi! To adjust the size of this blanket, you’ll want to begin with a row of foundation double crochet stitches that is multiple of 3 + 2.

  6. AvatarRoxane says

    Dear Toni,

Thanks for a great looking blanket and easy to follow tutorial! I’m going to use this pattern for a lapghan to donate to our local kidney dialysis center. My daughter works with many patients that are always cold due to the dialysis plus the cold room temperature. This design will definitely bring some cheer!

    • Toni L.Toni L. says

That is so sweet, Roxane. I’m sure the patients will really appreciate your thoughtfulness 🙂

Beautiful blanket I’ve had pinned for awhile and now plan on making for a friend! Quick question, if I wanted to finish the edges a little, do you have a recommendation? (Or another blanket I could adapt the edge from? Preferable not tassels.) Thank you so much for sharing!

    • Toni L.Toni L. says

Hi darling! Glad you’re giving this pattern a try. It works with just about any border, so go with whatever style you like. To keep it simple, you could do a crab stitch in one of your accent colors.
