The Mulled Cider Cowl, a split hem scarf made with gradient yarn

Mulled Cider

Make your early autumn dreams come true when you make the Mulled Cider Cowl, a FREE Tunisian crochet pattern from TL Yarn Crafts x JOANN!

As I sit here melting in the summer heat on my porch, watching the ice cubes dissolve in my lemonade, all I can think is – Is it fall yet? There always comes a time in the dog days of summer when I’m just over all the 90+ degree days and a dip in the pool isn’t cutting it anymore.

I’m longing to hear the leaves crunch under my suede ankle booties while I sip my PSL (#judgementfreezone). In anticipation of the crisp weather, I’m introducing the Mulled Cider Cowl, a FREE Tunisian crochet pattern made in collaboration with my friends at JOANN.

One of my favorite things about summer is all the traveling I get to do and the crochet projects I can take with me. Most recently, I was planning a trip to South Carolina to visit family. When I booked my plane ticket, I saw that I had pretty long layovers on the roundtrip flight.

Combine that with showing up to the airport 2 hours early for check-in, I knew I’d have plenty of time to work on my latest design, the Mulled Cider Cowl. It’s a sea of Tunisian knit stitch, which makes for a mindful way to pass the time while lingering in airports.

When the stitch of a project is so simple, like with the Mulled Cider Cowl, you can really have some fun choosing yarn. The smooth fabric off the Tunisian knit stitch allows uniquely colorful yarns to shine. With that in mind, I made a trip to my local JOANN to find something special for my latest design.

And JOANN did not disappoint! It had been a while since I shopped and there were a bunch of new yarns. I was getting pretty cozy with a big ball of mohair blend when my eyes fell on Ferris Wheel, a cake yarn from Lion Brand. To say it was love at first sight would be an understatement. I truly could not get the yarn in my cart fast enough!

With all of its features, it’s easy to fall in love with Ferris Wheel. It’s worsted weight, which makes it versatile for everything from garments to accessories. The self-striping colorways have gentle transitions, resolving one of the biggest gripes makers have with the cake yarns. And the color range in the collection is amazing. There are plenty of brights and neutrals that are all perfectly paired together in a single cake. I went for the range of browns and grey tones in the Morning Java colorway.

As I was working on the Mulled Cider Cowl, I had to keep the features of the Tunisian knit stitch in mind. It produces a thick fabric and uses a good amount of yarn, so it will make something that is very warm, and it can curl A LOT while you’re working on it. After I finished the panels of the cowl, I blocked them well, then did the assembly and finishing. Taking the time to block my piece completely changed the drape of the fabric and made the whole cowl less dense and easier to wear (so, pretty please, don’t skip this step!). The resulting piece is comfortable and warm, perfect for layering all season long.

The Mulled Cider Cowl is made bottom-up using the uniquely beautiful Tunisian knit stitch. Two identical rectangles make up the body of the cowl. The rectangles are seamed along the long sides to make a tube with one side only seamed part way. The cowl is finished with crochet ribbing on the top to tame the curl and add a decorative touch.

NOTES:

  • This pattern uses multiple traditional and Tunisian crochet techniques. Use the following video tutorials as needed:
  • Traditional Return Pass: Follow the foundation row and each Tunisian crochet row with the Traditional Return Pass.
    • Traditional Return Pass Instructions: Ch 1, *yarn over, pull through two loops; repeat from * until 1 loop remains on hook.
  • The following instructions are implied for Tunisian crochet rows:
    • The loop already on the hook at the beginning of the forward pass counts as the first stitch
    • Always Tunisian simple stitch in the last stitch of the row, working under both loops of the last stitch.

Cowl Panel (Make 2)

Assembly

Block both panels to 13” x 19”. Ends may still be curled. I allowed the bottom edge to stay slightly curled.

With right sides of cowl facing each other, use the mattress stitch to seam long ends of one side together.

Do the same for the other side, stopping when there are about 5” left unseamed before the bottom.

Weave in all remaining ends.

Ribbing

Row 1: With right side facing out and 5.5mm crochet hook, join yarn with a sl st in a bind off stitch near a seam. Ch 5, sc in the 2nd ch from hook and each remaining ch, sl st in next 2 sts on bind off edge, turn.

Row 2: Sk 2 sl st, sc BLO in each sc, turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc BLO in each sc, sl st in next 2 sts on bind off edge, turn.

Repeat Rows 2 and 3 around the bind off edge ending with a Row 2 repeat. When done, fasten off and use tail to sew ends closed.

Cut yarn and weave in remaining ends.

Hi Toni..do you have any affordable recommendations for Tunisian hooks? I’ve have never seen them in stores. Also, any other suggestions for a sub for the Ferris Wheel yarn? I’m in Canada and ave never seen it. Thankyou

    • Toni L.Toni L. says

Sure, Coleen! There are some great affordable hooks on Amazon (this hook set would be perfect for this project). And you can substitute any worsted weight yarn for this project. I’m not sure what you have locally, but a gradient yarn from Lion Brand, Red Heart, or your local craft store should do it.

No judgement at all, but what’s a PSL? This cowl is BEAUTIFUL Toni!! Oh man. I bought some Ferris wheel (in Imaginary Garden) and didn’t really like it, but I MUST get this colorway!! It’s incredible. I love that you split the hem on this. I am really started to like shorter scarves and things I can get closer around my neck but also that aren’t suffocating!! I like the idea of making this in two pieces. I just may add buttons and make it a cross-over cowl.
Thank you so much for the pattern!! By the way I gave up on the blanket made with Strata, just for now!!

Hi Jana! A PSL is a pumpkin spice latte – just a bit of Starbucks jargon for fun 🙂 I’m really glad that you like the Mulled Cider Cowl pattern. I’d love to see yours if you decide to make one!
