Beginner Crochet Hat and Scarf Set

Beanies and hats are classic first-time projects for crocheters. They are appealing to newbies because of how practical and speedy they are. And the best compliment to a crochet hat is a matching scarf. Then you have an instant gift for the holidays, back to school, and birthdays.

The Marlo Hat + Scarf set are the perfect meditative projects to practice new crochet skills and really impress yourself. The hat explores texture while the scarf leans more on negative space, creating a balance that looks so very trendy when styled together.

Crocheting in the Round

The Marlo Hat uses a crochet technique called working in the round. As opposed to flat rows, working in the round gives a 3D effect to your crochet project and is the ideal way to make a hat.

To make your hat, begin with a long length of ribbing made by working single crochet stitches into the back loop only. Then, the ends of the ribbing are seamed together and the hat body is worked off of the long edge left behind. The effect is a snug hat that comes together quickly without any visible seams.

Crocheting with Worsted Weight Yarn

Yarn comes in varying thicknesses, categorized into “weights“. Very thin yarn can be difficult for beginner crocheters to work with, and yarn that is too thick can make the experience feel clunky. The Marlo Hat + Scarf are made with worsted weight yarn, a middle-of-the-road thickness that is ideal for most crochet projects. If Goldilocks were a crocheter, she would use worsted weight yarn.

Since worsted weight yarn is so versatile, there are lots of different options on the market. You can use these options to choose the perfect yarn for your Marlo Hat + Scarf. The original sample uses Lion Brand Wool-Ease, a delightfully soft acrylic blend with a touch of wool. Some alternatives would be Brava Worsted, Lion Brand Basic Stitch, and Amigo XL.

Do you have exact yardage for each piece? Want to try the scarf in a self stripping yarn but need to make sure that I have enough before I get started. Thanks!

    • AvatarTracy Reifer says

Im patiently waiting for it too! I started the scarf last Monday and have frogged and frogged. I’m getting pretty frustrated…..

  2. AvatarAlisha says

I’m confused on the row 8 how many stitches should we have 38? i have the same amount of clusters and hdc. but keep coming up with more than 38 stitches.

  3. AvatarVirginia says

Toni I have made my daughter this for Christmas, she loved it. It is so professional and looks like I got it in a boutique. I made myself one too, thank you for teaching me new skills and sharing your beautiful patterns.

  4. AvatarKasia says

Hi Toni! I love this pattern, thank you so much for sharing. If I wanted to make this using a slightly thicker yarn (its from a local store, approx 8mm hook is suggested for it) could I follow this same pattern or is there something I should change? Thank you!

    • Toni L.Toni L. says

Hi! Glad you like the pattern. You will need to use a larger hook size to accommodate the heavier yarn. You’ll also need to make adjustments to the hook size and number of repeats so your hat doesn’t come out too big.
