10 MORE Places to Buy Yarn Online

There’s something especially exciting about discovering a new place to buy yarn. A different shop means new-to-you brands, unexpected color palettes and, if the yarn stars align, a sale that makes adding a few extra skeins feel completely reasonable.

But ordering yarn online can also feel like a gamble. You can’t squeeze the skein, compare colors in person or ask someone in the aisle for advice. That’s why I’ve gathered 10 more places to buy yarn online, from value-focused retailers and international shops to luxury yarn destinations and independent dyers. Consider this your invitation to expand your yarn-shopping horizons without wandering blindly through the internet.

3 // Ice Yarns at IceYarns.com

Known For: Multipack pricing, frequent new releases, deep discounts and yarns you may not see in U.S. craft stores.

4 // Annie’s Attic at AnniesAttic.com

Summary: Annie’s has been part of the craft world since 1975 and now operates under the Annie’s Attic name. Along with yarn, you’ll find patterns, project kits, tools, books and supplies for crochet, knitting, quilting and other crafts.

10 // Shop Directly from Indie Yarn Dyers

Summary: Independent yarn dyers create small-batch colorways, rich tonals, playful speckles and specialty fiber blends you are unlikely to find from larger commercial brands. Every studio operates differently, which makes discovering a new dyer part of the fun.

Some of my favorites include Nicole of Hue Loco, Ashley of Montana Crochet and Ashleigh of Sewrella Yarn.

Shipping: Varies by studio and destination. Free shipping is less common, although some dyers offer qualifying thresholds or occasional promotions. Pay attention to whether the yarn is ready to ship or available for preorder, since preorder collections may take several weeks to arrive.

Known For: Limited-edition colorways, specialty fibers, advent calendars, collaborations, seasonal collections and the opportunity to support independent artists directly.

Crochet may be the hobby, but buying and collecting yarn is definitely a hobby of its own. Exploring a new shop gives you the chance to discover a fiber you’ve never tried, fall in love with an unexpected color or find the perfect yarn for a project that hasn’t even made it onto your list yet.

Before you check out, give your cart one quick reality check. Make sure you have enough yardage for the entire project, confirm the dye lots when possible and compare the final price after shipping. A $3 skein feels a little less exciting when it costs $14 to reach your front door.

Once the practical details are handled, have some fun with it. Take a chance on something new, support a small business or finally order the yarn you’ve been visiting online for months. There are few things more delightful than a box of fresh yarn arriving on your doorstep.

I also enjoy shopping at https://www.herrschners.com they have a good selection of well known brands, as well as their own brand and Willow brand yarns. Free and reduced shipping come up frequently as promotions – so it’s worth waiting and watching for those deals. 🙂

Thank you for this great service, both the video and the blog. Unfortunately the two nearest LYS folded in the pandemic and the next nearest is not so near at all. I now shop exclusively online, unless I travel to a city (for work) which also has a local yearn store. Some great (and new!) suggestions here to add to my stash.

Thank you for this information. It came at the perfect time. (Do you have a camera in my house?) LOL. I was just say I wish I had more than one online site to purchase yarn. Thank you again.

I love Lovecraft’s Paintbox yarns. Their cotton and acrylics are so soft.

If you ever find yourself in Florida, there’s a yarn shop in Winter Haven (south west of Orlando) named The Four Purls. They have their own brand of yarn created by one of their purls as a school project, called Emma’s Yarn. Comes in several different weights and fibers and some cool dye jobs. I make a point to visit when I visit by BFF.

I found a site, expressionfiberarts.com that I love. They hand dye all of their own yarn. It’s all high end yarn, so soft and beautiful. They have pattern designers creating incredible knit & crochet patterns. The owner and several other women create these. Their crochet patterns are some of the most beautiful ones I’ve seen. They’re very soft and flowy, and most are easy. The woman who owns this company makes a YouTube video for every pattern to get you started, and to show you how to crochet/knit any unusual stitches. If you sign up for their emails, you receive new patterns and sales, both of which they have weekly.

I love ICE Yarns, and their shipping time is amazing. Even though I’m in Ohio (USA), I can get my package in a week, sometimes less. All that I’ve ever ordered has been top quality. If I had a single complaint, it would be, when I’ve emailed to ask certain questions (like if there were solid color yarns that went with a particular multicolor yarn, in the same content, like premium acrylic) I never got a real answer back. Pay close attention to the weight of the yarn, as sometimes it’s a little confusing and you might get a perfect color in the wrong weight. But do yourself a favor … do the math. Break it down to what it cost per 100gram, including the shipping into that, and you’ll find you’re paying less than you would for yarn at Walmart or the like.

Don’t forget to check out your local fiber arts reuse stores! You’ll be surprised what you’ll find there. Best yet, it helps out a non-profit provide important community services AND keeps all that wonderful crafty material out of the landfills.

Having said all that, besides the big online corporate stores, when I need to look elsewhere, I like shopping from The Woolly Thistle, Halcyon Yarns, SimplySock, and others. They are LYS options, but with an online twist. Sadly, the only LYS within an hour’s drive of me closed a year ago, or I would shop there.

My favorite indie-dyers are Dragon Hoard Yarn and MountaintopYarn. I would also like to point out that although not always consistent with what they carry, if money is tight the dollar tree has started carrying yarn. It’s usually the premier brand in different weights.

Hey there, Brandy 🙂 Yes, I believe Dollar Tree sells Premier yarns! A very good affordable option. And we will have to check out those dyers!

I’m in Australia and would absolutely love to hear from more Aussie crocheters! 🇦🇺🧶 With Toni’s recent trip to Australia, I’m hoping we might see more Australian yarn companies featured, or even some recommendations for overseas yarn brands that offer great shipping to Australia. I’d love to discover some new favourites! 💕
