Crafting Connections: Celebrate World Wide Knit In Public Day 2024

World Wide Knit in Public Day - June 8, 2024

The Power of Community in Crafting

Crafting has a magical way of bringing people together! I’ve experienced this firsthand with the amazing connections I’ve made through TL Yarn Crafts over the years. Every new event I attend brings fresh faces and new friends into my crafting circle. With World Wide Knit in Public Day coming up on June 8th, let’s celebrate the incredible value of both online and offline communities and how they enrich and transform our craft pursuits.

The Art of Yarn-Bombing: Crochet in Public Spaces

Have you ever noticed how many awesome community craft projects are led by crocheters and feature crochet? Our craft is perfect for sharing big, impactful ideas in creative and fun ways. One way we’re seeing crochet out in the world is through yarn-bombing.

Yarn Bombing in Urban Settings

This colorful street art adds decorative elements to otherwise dull urban features like benches, fences, and streetlight poles. While not a new trend, yarn installations have become a more accepted and less damaging form of street art. CBS Mornings even interviewed an artist about her yarn-bombing projects back in 2019 in this fun video clip. Plus, London Kaye’s book “Crochet has highlighted the playful side of our craft, changing how many people see it.

Connecting Through Identifiable Projects at Events

Another fun way crocheters are connecting is by creating identifiable projects to wear to big events. Matching hats, legwarmers, or even funny little amigurumi attached to your bag or backpack can be a fun addition to a concert costume, festival wear, or fiber tour day that will help you find other crocheters while navigating busy places. Just imagine a parliament of little Owlbert Owls finding their way around Flock Fiber Festival this August or at Rhinebeck this October.

Yarny Retreats: Entering a Bubble of Creativity to Share and Learn Together

Craft Retreats for connection and community

Nothing beats the magic of a yarny retreat, where you can immerse yourself in creativity and camaraderie. These retreats are more than just getaways; they’re experiences that foster learning, sharing, and deep connections with fellow crafters. Take SQUAM, for example—a haven for creative souls offering workshops, art, and nature. Similarly, The Maker’s Retreat provides a space where you can escape the daily grind and dive into a world filled with yarn, inspiration, and the joy of creating together. These retreats are perfect for renewing your passion for crochet, learning new techniques, and making lifelong friends.

Crocheting for Charity: Organizing an Opportunity to Use Our Creative Forces for Good

One of the most rewarding aspects of crochet is using your skills to make a positive impact. Crocheting for charity is a heartfelt way to give back, and there are many opportunities to do so. Projects like Project Linus provide handmade blankets to children in need, while hospitals and hospices often welcome cozy hats and shawls for patients. Even animal shelters appreciate soft, warm blankets for their furry residents. Organizing a charity crochet event brings people together and channels our collective creativity into acts of kindness, making the world a little warmer, one stitch at a time.

Crochet Alongs: Building Community by Crocheting the Same Project at the Same Time

Have you ever joined a Crochet Along (CAL)? They’re a great way to nurture a sense of community while working on the same project. You get support, inspiration, accountability, and that shared sense of achievement that makes it all so much fun.

Introducing the HexaGranny Crochet Along! Ready to make your next (or first!) crochet cardigan? Take the fear out of wearables with this four-week crochet challenge. The fun kicks off June 24th. In the meantime, get the full details in this very thorough blog post.

Plus, if you’re looking for a more structured environment, check out the TL Yarn Crafts Crochet Academy. It’s perfect for learning and growing, no matter your skill level. A fresh new Crochet Academy starts in August, and I can’t wait to get started with all of you!

World Wide Knit In Public Day is not just for Knitters

Even though it has “knit” in the name, World Wide Knit in Public Day isn’t just for knitters. In fact, crafters from all over the world will be showing up and showing off their projects in progress to raise awareness about what we do and encourage new folks to take an interest in our crafts. More crochet representation starts with crocheters showing up in these spaces, too. Check with your local yarn stores, crafty friends, and the official Knit in Public Day website to see where they’ll meet up, and then invite your friends.

I’m so excited about World Wide Knit in Public Day, I’ve organized a special event at Comerica Park for the Detroit Tigers vs. Milwaukee Brewers game. If you’re local, bring your yarn, enjoy the game, and join in the fun! It’s also ‘Pink Out the Park’ day for breast cancer awareness, so wear your favorite pink item.

Worldwide Knit in Public Day: June 8, 2024

Here’s the Comerica Park Event Scoop:

Date: June 8th, game starts at 4:10 pm

Don’t have a local meet-up? Planning one is easy! Simply find a location that won’t mind people gathering and check with management to make sure you’re in the clear, then invite everyone you know to meet up for a specific window of time. Get the word out by posting on Instagram, Facebook, sending out emails to your local community, and encouraging your venue to share, too. Make sure your event flyer or posting says that ALL crafts are welcome, and be sure to get there a little early to greet newcomers who might be nervous about making new friends.
