Beginner Tunisian Crochet Rib Stitch Scarf

Ever since I first picked up Tunisian crochet, I’ve been hooked on discovering new stitches. I stumbled upon the lovely Tunisian Rib Stitch, also known as the Saloniki stitch, while preparing for the Tunisian Snowy Sampler pattern. By combining basic Tunisian crochet stitches, you can create an eye-catching fabric that’s flexible and beautifully textured.

If you’ve been thinking about trying Tunisian crochet, the Rainbow Ridge Scarf is a fantastic first project! This lovely rib-stitch scarf features a delightful one-row repeat throughout, combining basic stitches. Once you’ve mastered the blissfully repetitive rib stitch, you’ll find that tackling more advanced ideas like color changes and the bind-off becomes a breeze!

The Perfect Yarn for Your New Scarf

After designing 8 new pattern for the launch of my new yarn, Apricity, with Hobbii, I was left with a basket full of gorgeous leftovers. With yarn this pretty, there’s no way I was throwing it away. What better way to show off the vibrant 25-skein color palette than with a scarf that uses every shade?!

Apricity is a category 6 super bulky weight blend of dreamy alpaca, cozy wool, and durable polyamide. It’s considered a blown yarn, which means the natural fibers are blown into the polyamide casing, creating a yarn that is warm, but also lightweight and lofty. I started my scarf with color 01 – Sugar, and worked short sections of each subsequent color until I reached color 25 – Midnight. I had so much joy while creating this Tunisian crochet rib stitch scarf. The colors flowed effortlessly into one another, begging me to add one more row until it was completed.

I happened to have all 25 colors of Apricity on hand for my blanket. If you don’t, I would also recommend a 5-skein color palette for this project. Five skeins will yield 250 grams, which is more than enough to make a scarf with the same dimensions as the original. I had some fun pulling color palettes to help inspire your project. Need some ideas? Here are 5 palettes you can use for your Rainbow Ridge Scarf:

Embrace the chill of winter with this palette of icy blue and neutral notes. Colors include Sugar, Hazelnut, Oat Milk, Stone, and Nightfall. Get the yarns.

Tired of those dreary winter days? Beckon the brighter days of spring with this bright palette. Colors include Amber, Tiger, Fuchsia, Poppy, and Dove. Get the yarns.

Enjoy a lush, jewel tone moment with this palette of pigmented hues. Colors include Poppy, Tawny Olive, Hickory, Royal, and Flora. Get the yarns.

How about an elevated boho moment? It’s playful, yet sophisticated, and bound to match everything in your coat closet. Colors include Quartz, Sugar, Flora, Spice, and Sage. Get the yarns.

For a year-round, unisex scarf, I would choose these toasted brown options. Together, they create an opulent, mature vibe that pairs well with a vintage camel coat. Colors include Spice, Hazelnut, Taupe, Hickory, and Sugar. Get the yarns.

Looking for an alternative to Apricity? If you want to swap in a different yarn, I recommend any bulky weight yarn you have in your stash. While categorized as a #6 super bulky weight, Apricity works up a bit lighter. Bulky weight yarns like Hobbii’s Fluffy Day XL and WeCrochet’s Wonderfluff both bring the lofty feel and fluffy softness of the original yarn.

I saw on Instagram that you also made this with the Sirdar Jewelspun Chunky. Did you use the same hook size for that version?

Thanks Toni! I just completed this using Hobbii Tea Time XL (a full skein) and the size 8 hook was perfect.
