How to Make a Crochet Coaster and Placemat

Sundays in summer were made for brunch with besties, and I love pulling out all the stops when the girls come over. Ever since upgrading to my big-girl dining table, I’ve been on a mission to keep it protected and looking fabulous. Enter the Sunrise Coaster and Placemat—a set that brings personality to your table while saving your furniture from the inevitable mimosa spills.

This set is built on one of my all-time favorite stitches, the double crochet. Round after rhythmic round, you’ll find yourself in a meditative flow as the fabric grows to your perfect size. And the cherry on top? A scalloped border that tidies the edges and adds just the right amount of summery sass.

The Best Yarn for Your Table Setting

The secret to a coaster and placemat set that’s both beautiful and built to last? The right yarn. For me, it was love at first stitch with Lion Brand’s 24/7 Cotton. This mercerized, chainette-spun worsted weight cotton has the perfect mix of strength and shine, making table settings that can stand the test of time.

And with over 40 stunning shades, the color play is endless. I went with a summery blend of soft pastels and bold accents, but you can tailor your palette to match your vibe. Feeling minimalist? Keep it sleek with a single shade and whip up a full six-person set that’s timeless and chic.

Looking for the easiest way to start your Sunrise Coaster and Placemat set? Get the all-in-one kit from Lion Brand. Your kit includes 6 skeins of 24/7 Cotton. The kit comes with the original design colors by default, but you can customize your palette in any configuration you like. Add in a crochet hook if you need it, and all of the supplies arrive at your doorstep. After purchasing the kit, download the pattern from your confirmation email. GIVE ME THAT KIT!

MATERIALS

FINISHED SIZE

Coaster measures 5.5″, placemat measures 13.5″

GAUGE

4” – 8 rows x 14 stitches, blocked

ABBREVIATIONS

Ch = chain

Dc = double crochet

MR = magic ring

Sc = single crochet

Sk = skip

Sl St = slip stitch

St(s) = stitch(es)

PATTERN NOTES

  • Starting chain-2 counts as the first double crochet of the round.
  • DO NOT TURN at the end of your rounds.
  • This pattern uses crochet shorthand. “2dc” means to place 2 double crochet stitches into the same stitch. “Dc 2” means to double crochet in each of the next 2 stitches.
  • Be diligent about counting your stitches at the end of each round. This style of working in the round prevents a noticeable seam at the join, but can make it tricky to know where to place the last stitch. When you complete a round, count your stitches to ensure a proper count.

    Miss Toni, Thank you so much for the Crochet Academy! I have been crocheting off and on for several years and picking things up as I go. However, I definitely have knowledge gaps! Crochet Academy has helped to fill in some of those gaps. I have looked forward to your emails these past few weeks.
    Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge in a fun and engaging way. I am excited for the Crochet Along and to see what everyone makes.

    I’m wondering if the join for each round would be even less visible if you start each one with a stacked single crochet instead of a chain 2. Is there a reason to not do that?

      I haven’t tried this method, but I encourage you to give it a go 🙂

    I’m so excited to start this project! The pattern says we need a 4.5 mm hook… I have a 4 mm and a 5 mm… Which would be best to use?

      Hi! I would use a 4mm hook. You likely will need to steam block your pieces at the end 🙂

    Something to note: I had a hard time keeping track of my stitches between increases on later rounds of the placement, so another way I noticed to keep track this:
    Increase on the stitch at the bottom of the chain between rounds, then do double crochet until you reach the next increase in the round below. Insert your increase on the stitch on the right side of your previous round’s increase. If you imagine the anatomy of the increase as ⁻\⁻/⁻, then you’re puting this round’s increase on the top right stitch. This pattern follows the pattern from previous rounds, so if you pay attention to where the increase is you should be able to find it and follow it out to as many rounds as you want.
    Not sure if this will just confuse people more, but just want to mention that option

    This is pretty much the method I use, and the start of the round is almost invisible.

    Hi! I ordered the crochet kit from Lion Brand for this pattern. I am a tight crocheter. I found I was able to meet guage usung a 6.5 mm. I don’t like the look of my stitches using that big of a hook. If I use a 4.5 mm hook, could I just add more rounds to get closer to gauge? Thank you!

      Hi! Yes, you can absolutely add more rounds to your coaster to reach the desired size. Just keep adding rounds, like I show for the placemat 🙂
