Tunisian crochet in the round

Whenever I encounter a new-to-me crochet technique, I take a deep breath and recite the advice I received from my Mama GG – it’s not hard; it’s just new. Trying a new technique can be scary, and Tunisian crochet in the round (TiTR) feels especially daunting since you need to work with two hooks instead of one.

But never fear, Tunisian crochet adventurer – I took the leap to learn this technique to share it with you. Tunisian crochet in the round is not as scary as it seems, and it makes this Tunisian crochet accessory pair work up in a snap. Use the TITR technique to make this squishy cowl after working on the ear warmer in flat rows. You’ll be finished before you know it, with another super power unlocked!

Crocheting with Self-Striping Yarn

With more and more self-striping yarn hitting local yarn store shelves, crocheters are getting down with these colorful cake yarns. The Tiffany Duo uses Lion Brand’s Ferris Wheel, a self-striping roving yarn with a subtle ombre effect. The shifts in color create a harmonious effect that makes even the most simple projects feel unique and special.

If you want to elevate your Tunisian crochet accessory set to new heights, try out this gorgeous yarn. It’s machine washable, lightweight, and only gets softer with wear and washing. When using self-striping yarns, keep the stitch pattern simple to really let the yarn shine. I went with a combination of Tunisian knit and reverse stitches and couldn’t be happier with the outcome.

See why crocheters love Lion Brand’s Ferris Wheel!

Let’s make the Tiffany Ear Warmer and Cowl together! Start the tutorial video below:

ROWS 10-17: Repeat Rows 2-9.

ROWS 18-21: Repeat Rows 2-5.

BIND OFF: Inserting hook as for tks, (sl st 1, ch 1) across row to last st, insert hook in last st as for Lts and complete the sl st. Fasten off leaving a long tail for seaming.

BOTTOM EDGING: Rotate to work along Foundation edge. Join with sl st in first st of row, ch 1, (sl st 1, ch 1) across to last st, sl st in last st. Fasten off.

FINISHING: Steam block piece to 5.5” x 20”. Assemble using the photo tutorial below. Weave in all ends.

  1. Hold right sides of ear warmer short ends together and fold into an S-shape as shown in the first image.
  2. Thread the remaining long tail of yarn onto a tapestry needle. Run a zig-zag seam down the folded edges as shown in the second image. Be sure to catch all 6 layers of fabric with each pass.
  3. Knot the yarn at the end. Open the ear warmer and flip it inside out to finish. Weave in final end.

Cowl

NOTES

  • The Cowl is worked using Tunisian crochet in the round. You will need one skein/ball of yarn for the Forward Pass and a separate skein/ball of yarn for the Return Pass. Prepare your yarn before you start.
  • Markers are placed on the first st of each new stitch pattern. This is to help you keep your place and ensure that you make no more than 4 rounds of each stitch. Move markers or add new markers as you proceed.

BOTTOM RIBBING

ROW 1: With 5mm crochet hook and FwdP yarn, ch 6, sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across row, turn. (5 sc)

ROW 2: Ch 1, sc BLO of each st across, turn.

Repeat Row 2 to 99 rows total. Rotate to work into row ends.

COWL BODY

ROUNDS 1: Change to 6.5mm double ended hook. Mark lp on hook – this is the first st of your round. Continuing with FwdP yarn, pull up a lp in the end of the next row, pull up a lp in the end of each row across ribbing. (99 sts)

  • RETURN PASS: To begin the RetP, shift the lps to the opposite end of the hook and turn so the WS is facing. Use the second ball of yarn to yarn over and pull up a loop. For this round and all subsequent rounds, (yarn over, pull through 2 lps) to work the Return Pass. Complete the instructions in the parentheses until there are no less than 4 lps on the hook. Shift loops to opposite end of hook and turn work so RS is facing to continue with FwdP.

ROUND 2: Bring end of row to meet hook without twisting the work. Tks in the next st to begin working in the round – move marker to this st. Tks each st around.

ROUNDS 3-5: Tks around.

ROUND 6: Use another marker to mark first st. Trs around.

ROUNDS 7-9: Trs around.

ROUNDS 10-13: Tks around, placing marker on first st of Round 10.

Repeat Rounds 6-13 six times, placing a marker on the first st of each Row 6 and Row 10 repeat. When complete, you will have 8 knit sections and 7 reverse sections.

After final round, complete the Return Pass until there is 1 lp of the Forward Pass yarn and 1 lp of the Return Pass yarn on the hook.

BIND OFF: Complete the following steps –

  1. (RS) Slip the FwdP yarn through the RetP yarn – there is now 1 lp of FwdP yarn on the hook.
  2. Sl st each st around, inserting hook as for tks.
  3. After last st, fasten off FwdP yarn, pull the lp out, and thread it onto a tapestry needle. Join with an invisible join (tutorial).
  4. Fasten off RetP yarn.
  5. Weave in ends remaining from Bind Off.
