Boho Fringe Vest

Crocheting your very first garment can be intimidating for brand-new stitchers. So often, we are encouraged to start off with small projects like hats and washcloths. But there’s no reason your first crochet project can’t be a wearable piece, especially when it’s as easy as this cute boho-inspired layer.

The beauty of the Lynn Fringe Vest is how simple it is to make. Start with the back panel, then build the front panels in seamlessly. Join the sides, trim the front, add fringe, and you’re all done!

Pima Cotton Yarn for Summer

Cotton is an obvious choice when crocheting summer garments. It has a light touch on the skin and helps reflect heat instead of holding onto it. Pima Cotton from Lion Brand is made of 100% Pima cotton, which is a more luxurious version of the traditional cotton you’ll find in craft stores. The result is a silky smooth feel. Find Pima Cotton from Lion Brand.

If Pima Cotton isn’t the right fit for you, swap it out for a suitable substitution. You’re looking for a category 4 worsted weight yarn with some cotton content. Cotton blends with linen or acrylic are a great choice, but steer clear of wool if you plan to wear this in warmer months. Some yarns I would recommend are Lion Brand’s Touch of Linen, Paintbox Cotton Aran, or WeCrochet’s Comfy Worsted.

Learn how to substitute yarn the easy way in this blog post.

NEXT ROWS: Rep ROW 2 until piece measures 32 (32, 33, 34)” from starting ch. Do not fasten off.

FRONT – SIDE A

Begin counting from the edge. Mark the 21st and 28th (24th and 32nd, 27th and 36th, 30th and 40th) esc.

ROW 1: Ch 3, sk esc at base of ch and next ch-1 sp, esc in next esc, (ch 1, esc in next esc) to first marker, placing last st in marked st, leave remaining sts unworked, turn, drop marker. (21, 24, 27, 30 esc)

ROW 2: Ch 3, sk esc at base of ch and next ch-1 sp, esc in next esc, (ch 1, esc in next esc) across, placing last esc in 2nd ch of tch, turn.

ROW 3: Rep Row 2 until Front – Side A measures 28 (28, 29, 30)”. Count number of rows. Fasten off.

FRONT – SIDE B

Return to remaining marker. Sl st to join in marked st and work toward outer edge.

ROW 1: Ch 3, sk esc at base of ch and next ch-1 sp, esc in next esc, (ch 1, esc in next esc) to marker, placing last st in marked st, turn, drop marker. (21, 24, 27, 30 esc)

ROW 3: Rep Row 2 until Front – Side B is the same number of rows as Front – Side A. Fasten off.

ASSEMBLY

STEP 1: Choose what will be the RS and WS of your piece. Lay the piece with WS facing out and fold at shoulders.

STEP 2: Place a marker 9 (9, 10, 11)” from shoulder along edge, catching both thicknesses of fabric. Repeat for other side. This is your arm opening.

STEP 3: Place a marker 12 (12, 11, 11)” from first marker along edge. Repeat for other side. This marks a split at the bottom of the vest.

STEP 4: Join with sl st at first marker, sc seam sides together, working in the following pattern – 1 sc in the edge of the next row, 2 sc in the edge of the next row – place the last st in the space of the second marker. Fasten off. Repeat for other side. Drop markers.

EDGING

Edging is placed around the arm openings and front opening of the vest (front opening extends from front opening to side split and around back of vest). The same technique is used for each of the three edgings needed. Follow these instructions for each edge:

  • For arm openings, join with sl st at base of arm hole.
  • For front opening, join with sl st in the valley of one of the side splits.

ROUND 1: With RS facing out, join where instructed, ch 1, sc in same st as join. Work evenly around opening using the following pattern for row ends – 1 sc in the edge of the next row, 2 sc in the edge of the next row – and sc in each esc and ch-1 over pattern stitch sections. Ch 1 before rotating at bottom corners. Join with sl st in first sc of round. Fasten off and weave in ends.

FINISHING

  1. Weave in all remaining ends.
  2. Steam block lightly to finished dimensions.
  3. Make + Attach Fringe: Using a small, sturdy book, wrap yarn around book multiple times to create fringe about 11” long. Holding two lengths of fringe together, attach fringe to bottom of vest in every other sc. Make additional fringe as needed. Steam fringe so it will lay flat and trim even as needed.

You make crochet look so easy! I have been a crochet-a-holic most of my life, learning from my mom. She was right-handed and I am left-handed but if you paid me to crochet left-handed I couldn’t do it! lol I have learned a lot from watching your tutorials and cannot wait to try this granny sweater! Thank you for all your hard work and fabulous tutorials and other videos you put out!
