Overlook Wrap, a FREE Tunisian crochet shawl pattern

If “learn Tunisian crochet” has been on your crafty bucket list, consider this your sign to finally check it off. The Overlook Wrap is a free Tunisian crochet shawl pattern I designed for Crochet Academy — and it might just be the pattern that changes the way you think about crochet altogether.

Tunisian crochet is the technique that made me fall in love with this craft all over again. The stitches are rhythmic, the fabric is unlike anything regular crochet produces, and once you get going, it’s genuinely hard to put down. The Overlook Wrap walks you through four different stitch patterns so you get a real taste of what this technique can do, without it ever feeling like too much. I even have a free pattern and tutorial video ready and waiting. You’ve got this.

Your First Tunisian Crochet Project is HERE: Why You’ll Love the Overlook Wrap

Learning a new crochet skill doesn’t have to be intimidating, and I say that as someone who picked up Tunisian crochet in about five minutes at a yarn convention and immediately became obsessed. It has a learning curve, but it’s a gentle one, and the Overlook Wrap was designed to walk you right through it.

This Tunisian crochet shawl pattern starts with just three stitches and grows through simple increases as you progress through four complementary stitch patterns — Tunisian simple stitch, the lacy Arrowhead, the beautifully textured Chill stitch, and a Tunisian knit stitch/Tunisian reverse stitch section that looks so much like knitting that people will ask if you switched crafts. Increases in the first half, decreases in the second. By the time you’re done, you’ll have a stunning wrap and a skill set you didn’t have before. And the best part is you’ll have been too busy enjoying the process to notice.

The Best Yarns for Your Tunisian Crochet Shawl

A wrap this textured needs a yarn that knows its role — present enough to be beautiful, subtle enough to let the stitches do the talking. Lion Brand Mandala checks both boxes. The color-changing cake transitions seamlessly through its gradient with no extra knots or tails to manage, and the Warlock colorway winds through a palette of soft autumn shades that feels perfectly at home on this pattern. Nearly 600 yards per cake means you only need two to finish the whole thing.

If you can’t get your hands on Mandala, try another DK weight color-changing yarn, like Lion Brand Ice Cream, Hobbii Sunbird, or Caron Skinny Cakes. Each of these is acrylic-based with relatively long color changes that blend together seamlessly. Alternatively, I’d also recommend using one single color throughout your shawl for a dramatic take that lets the texture take center stage. You really can’t go wrong with this Tunisian crochet shawl pattern – it can stand up to just about any yarn.

SPECIAL STITCHES

  • Increase (inc): Pull up a loop in the space before the next stitch. This is the same as a Tunisian full stitch.
  • Last Tunisian Stitch (Lts): Insert hook under BOTH vertical bars of the last stitch and complete as for Tunisian Simple Stitch.
  • Return Pass (RetP): Chain 1, (yarn over, pull through next 2 loops on hook) until 1 loop remains on the hook.

NOTES

  • Construction: This Tunisian crochet shawl pattern begins with three stitches on the foundation row. Section 1 is worked in Tunisian simple stitch with increases at the end of every row. Progress through sections of three more stitch patterns, increasing every other row, until you reach the middle of the shawl. From there, the shawl is mirrored, working through the same stitch patterns in reverse order and ending with three stitches on the hook before the final bind off.
  • Color Choices: The original sample is made with a color-changing cake yarn that complements the texture of this project. If you plan to supply your own yarn, consider tonal or solid yarns or color-shifting cakes. Avoid highly variegated yarns, as they will make the textured sections more difficult to see.
