Beginner Chunky Crochet Blanket
Let’s face it, crochet blankets are just the best. As a designer, I see blankets as a blank slate to which I can add my creativity. Even as a beginner crocheter, you can make this blanket.
The background of the Avon Throw Blanket is a sea of single crochet stitches with a few strategically placed puff stitches. You’ll be amazed at the fun, modern chevron pattern you achieve from those cute puff stitches.
Reading Crochet Charts
The Avon Throw Blanket features written and charted instructions for the Puff Stitch Sections. Crochet charts are a visual way to represent lines of written text. Learning how to read crochet charts is an invaluable skill when trying out new crochet patterns. In the Avon Throw Blanket pattern, the chart shows where to place puff stitches to achieve the chevron pattern at both ends of this chunky crochet blanket.
This crochet chart is read from bottom to top, and from right to left. This orientation assumes you crochet right-handed, with rows starting on the right side of the work and progressing toward the left side. If you’re not a fan of crochet charts, use the written instructions instead.

Let’s make the Avon Throw Blanket together! Follow along in this tutorial video:
Blanket Setup
ROW 1 (RS): Ch 88, working in the back bump of the ch, sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across row, turn. (87 sts)
ROWS 2-11: Ch 1, sc across row, turn.

Written instructions for the Puff Stitch Section can be found below. Follow the chart as an alternative for rows 1-17 of the Puff Stitch Section. Note – this chart DOES NOT include RS rows. Follow instructions for Row 2 and all WS rows in Puff Stitch Section – 1 of the written pattern.
The chart is read from right to left and bottom to top, with Green Box 1 representing the first stitch of the row. For each row, chain 1, complete Green Boxes 1-4, then repeat Black Boxes 1-20 until 3 stitches remain, then complete Green Boxes 1-3 to end the row. Turn work when row is complete.
ROW 1 (WS): Ch 1, sc 3, puff st 1, (sc 19, puff st 1) 4 times, sc 3, turn.

As I began making this, after the first part of Crochet Academy, I discovered an error in the chevron pattern. The pattern repeat is shown as 19 stitches, but it should be 20 stitches. With 3 “edge” stitches on each side, the pattern as shown calls for 19 x 4 + 6 = 84 stitch width. To make the chevron pattern correctly (symmetric), requires 20 x 4 + 6 = 86 starting stitch width. The result of the pattern error can be seen in some of the photos. Using the puff stitch at the point as reference, the puff stitches in the next row should be 2 stitches left and 2 stitches right of the point. As the result of the short (by 1 stitch) repeat, the puff stitches are 2 stitches to one side, and only 1 stitch on the other.
Hi Toni!
I was wandering what other yarn could be used. The only thing is I’m in Australia and it needs to be cheap. I also don’t know what hook to use…. Other then that, I can’t wait to make this beautiful pattern.
Hi! You can use any bulky weight yarn. I have some suggestions on how to find a suitable yarn replacement in THIS blog post. As for the hook size, the pattern recommends a 10mm hook.
Hello
Since I am substituting yarn, I just made a swatch. I have way too many stitches for row for the 6 inch size, but also too short of rows. When I move up hook size, will that also make the stitches taller?
Hi! Stitch height comes from your tension, so adjusting the hook size won’t impact stitch height too much. If the yarn you are substituting is significantly lighter, you may want to consider doubling your yarn for this project.
Is this Tunisian crochet?
No – this is traditional crochet.
