Now in its sixth year, Crochet Academy brings together returning favorites, brand-new lessons, and a fresh lineup of beginner-friendly patterns.
What Is Crochet Academy?
I’ve always loved doing crochet alongs (aka CALs). Crochet Academy builds on the idea of a crochet-along by designating a period just for learning.

Crochet Academy is a free, 8-week event designed to take you from “What hook do I buy?” to “Wait…I made that?!”
If you’ve never picked up a crochet hook, don’t know which yarn to choose, or have tried crochet before and couldn’t quite get the hang of it, you’re in the right place. We’re starting at the very beginning, and I’ll be with you every step of the way.
Beginning August 17th, we’ll learn how to choose the right yarn and tools, make the basic crochet stitches, read patterns, and understand not just what to do, but why we do it. Already know how to crochet? Come on in! Returning makers can refresh their skills, take on the Honors Track, and get ready to make something beautiful with our Crochet Academy community.
After three weeks of learning, we’ll put those skills to work during a five-week crochet along featuring the Rhinebeck Collection: five brand-new, fall-ready designs created especially for Crochet Academy. Add in live events, giveaways, and thousands of makers cheering each other on, and you’ve got our biggest Crochet Academy yet.
Here’s how it all works:
GET READY | Now through August 16th
Sign up, gather your supplies, and get ready to lock in! To begin, you’ll need a 5 mm or 6 mm crochet hook, worsted-weight yarn in three or four colors, scissors, and a tapestry needle. Lion Brand kits for all five Rhinebeck Collection projects will also be available after the collection is revealed.
LEARN | August 17th through September 4th
We’ll spend three weeks building your crochet skills from the ground up. You’ll learn about yarn, tools, basic stitches, pattern reading, essential techniques, and more through approachable lessons, blog posts, and YouTube videos. Each lesson will arrive by email so you always know exactly what to work on next.
CHOOSE | August 20th
The new Rhinebeck Collection project kits drop on August 20th. Choose your favorites and get your kits early so they’ll arrive in time for the crochet along.
MAKE | September 7th through October 9th
It’s crochet-along time! Choose one of the five new designs from the Rhinebeck Collection and make it alongside crocheters from around the world. Pick one project or make them all. Bring your own yarn, or get the kit. This is your chance to practice your new skills, build your confidence, and enjoy the magic of making something with your own two hands.

What if I join after August 17th?
No problem! You can join Crochet Academy at any time. All lessons will be linked in this post as they become available, so you can start from the beginning and work at your own pace.
What if I don’t receive the emails?
First, check your spam, junk, and promotions folders. You can also search your inbox for emails from TL Yarn Crafts. Be sure you signed up using the correct email address and add me to your contacts so future lessons land safely in your inbox.
Do I have to complete each lesson on the day it is released?
Not at all. Daily emails will help you stay on track, but Crochet Academy is completely self-paced. Move through the lessons when it works for you and come back to them anytime.
Is Crochet Academy only for complete beginners?
Nope! Complete beginners will learn everything from the ground up, but returning and experienced crocheters are welcome too. Use the lessons to refresh your skills, fill in knowledge gaps, or take on the optional Honors Track for an extra challenge.
What is the Honors Track?
The Honors Track is a collection of optional lessons for makers who want to explore beyond the core curriculum. These lessons cover topics like granny squares, foundation stitches, Tunisian crochet, yarn substitutions, temperature blankets, and more. You do not need to complete the Honors Track to participate in the CAL.
Can left-handed makers participate?
Absolutely! Left-handed crocheters are welcome in Crochet Academy. Many of the techniques can be mirrored, and YouTube’s playback tools can also help you follow video demonstrations at a comfortable speed.
What supplies do I need for the lessons?
To get started, you’ll need a 5 mm or 6 mm crochet hook, worsted-weight yarn in three or four colors, scissors, and a tapestry needle. Individual practice projects and Honors Track lessons may require additional supplies, which will be listed with each lesson.
Do I need to purchase a project kit?
No. Lion Brand kits are a convenient way to get the yarn needed for each Rhinebeck Collection design, but they are completely optional. You’re welcome to shop for your own supplies or use yarn from your stash.
What is a CAL?
A CAL, or crochet along, is a virtual event where makers work on projects together. The Crochet Academy CAL begins after our three weeks of foundational lessons, giving you a chance to practice your new skills alongside makers from around the world.
When does the Crochet Academy CAL begin?
The five-week Crochet Academy CAL begins September 7th and continues through October 9th.
Which project should I make for the CAL?
Choose any of the five new designs from the Rhinebeck Collection, or choose from any of the previous years’ Crochet Academy designs. You have 24 designs to choose from. Pick the project that best matches your skill level, style, and available crochet time. You can make one project or challenge yourself to make more.
Can I make a pattern from a previous year?
Yes! You’re welcome to join the CAL using a Crochet Academy pattern from any previous year. The goal is to keep learning, make something you love, and enjoy creating alongside the community.
When will the new patterns be available?
The Rhinebeck Collection patterns will begin rolling out on September 7th. Free versions will be available on TLYCblog.com, and ad-free PDF versions will also be available for purchase.
Will there be tutorial videos for the new patterns?

When will the Lion Brand project kits be available?
Lion Brand kits for all five Rhinebeck Collection projects will be available beginning August 20th.
Can I use my own yarn for the CAL?
Absolutely! Use the materials list for your chosen pattern to find a suitable substitute. Pay close attention to yarn weight, fiber content, yardage, and gauge. We’ll also cover gauge and yarn substitutions during Crochet Academy to help you choose confidently.
Do I need any supplies beyond the project materials list?
The materials list includes what you need to complete each project. A few additional tools, such as blocking boards, locking stitch markers, a tape measure, scissors, or a garment steamer, may make the process easier depending on the design. Check your chosen pattern before getting started.
Can I get the Lion Brand kits internationally?
International availability, shipping costs, delivery times, customs fees, and taxes vary by location. Check Lion Brand’s current shipping information before ordering or contact [email protected] with questions about delivery to your country.
Do I need Instagram or Facebook to participate?
